For those that are using Home Assistant and Node Red, do you put them on the same raspberry pi or use one for each since they’re so cheap?

When I started out I put hassio on the raspberry pi and used the node red add on it worked well enough but slow at times. I use a desktop PC with docker now.

@campos624 I’ve never used a docker. But I’ve heard great things.

I assume you use standard home assistant and not HASSIO? No way to make adding extensions easy with docker I think from what I've been reading.

@lott320 actually I do use HASSIO. you can install add-ons the same way you can on a pi Docker makes each add-on into a separate images and HASSIO will create an internal Network inside Docker for them. Then it's just the Hassio you interface with.

Pardon the noob, but why do people prefer dockers? I have zero experience with them. But I’ve heard people use them for things like Home Assistant and Node Red and a lot of Unifi enthusiasts use dockers to host their network controller.

Docker is a system of virtual machines of sorts. Except each image is normally a single application. This is beneficial because if something goes wrong with an application it won't crash the whole computer. You can then delete the image and install it again without ever having to reboot your computer. There's also the cross platform advantage. Home Assistant and Node Red, for example, work on a Linux operating system. If you are using Windows, Docker would allow you to install the applications on your computer even though you aren't running Linux.

Do you have a guide you followed or have a site you can reference for this setup? Every install I've tried of HASSIO works but extensions try to install locally and the services never start.

I also recommend getting Portainer for Docker as well. This will let you control Docker through a nice web interface where you can see what containers are running and start/restart them if needed.

Which version of Ubuntu are you using? I'm on 16. 04 and have nothing but problems.

I'm on 18. 04. I use a minimal version of the desktop version instead of the server version to make it easier to configure things but once I set it up, I pretty much remained running and everything I did from then on was through Portainer and docker.

I am sorry for a little offtop, but what benefits Node Red have in HA setup? I use HA only for all the automatizations and feels comfortable with it. Or maybe I missed something?
