From the 20th of May, wink users will need to pay $5 per month to access their connected smart devices. Email sent on the 6th of May originally said it would happen on the 13th and the backlash made them extend it a week. Plenty of threads about it in the group already

@terrie Thanksng just got the email today.

I wouldn't pay a dime more then what I paid for the relay. Samsung Smart Things it is.

@meraz40 poor service. you've got 5 days to go and buy a Smartthings hub and learn to use it. LOL

@terrie Thanksng been using smart things for about a year in one unit. Got insteon in another and had that touch screen light switch with the Uber ad in the last one.

It would have been smart to roll out a ton of new features. And then charge a fee for advanced features above that. The device is trash.

@meraz40 if you read up on Wink this wasn’t a planned service fee. They’re literally on their last leg, employees aren’t getting paid, their expenses are higher due to covid and apparently this overseas deal fell through or has stalled so they’re hurting for capital right now.

@trimester Wink has effectively been dead for years - Will. i. am’s ego and delusions of grandeur have kept it afloat at large losses. This is the guy who claims his deal in Dubai (which fell through) would make him another Amazon. Riiiiiiiiiiiight.

@terrie Thanksng Not only $5 month, but I heard it was actually $5 per account. If that information is correct, that means every account you created for your hub needs to pay $5.

This is what any service-based devices should have been doing all along. None of this operates for free.

From the day I decided to begin smartening up my home, never once did I say or even think "Hey you know what would be really smart? let all these little devices be controlled and have access by the cloud. " I returned 4 smart thermostats and didnt buy another from the big box stores. not one of them can have full functionality without the cloud. I almost bought a nest because I really like the feel of the dial. .

I've always had a SmartThings hub since beginning my smart home journey. so I apologize for the ignorance, but wouldnt connected devices easily transfer over to something like a smartthings hub? If so, why wouldn't everyone just get a new hub and save the monthly fee? What was the advantage of going with Wink to begin with?
by (1.9k points)
@bohman Merritt I could not agree more with this. Samsung should have thought about a Hub migration feature that would do just that. Make it stupid simple for people to switch over and not have to set everything up again.

Makes me think about Automatic which got everyone to upgrade last year then shutdown this year.
