I use regular landscaping lights i purchased from Lowe’s and put them on a Samsung smart plug and run my schedule off of that

@skulduggery4 This is probably the way I'll go. Thanks!

One of my friends put the transformer inside his basement and then used a Belkin smart plug to controll it

@hine6 exact same thing I did.

Smart switches. Made more sense to me. Much cheaper for one switch that controls a dozen lights.

@famished566 yeah. Not sure why that hadn't occurred to me yet. Guess I got caught up. Thanks!

I'm using standard low voltage landscape lighting with the transformer plugged into a GE outdoor z-wave outlet.

@veradi1704 what transformer you use? Most of the ones i found use a timer, and I guess you need one that is always on. How do you do that?
by (240 points)
@veradi1704 love the outdoor beer tap! This looks amazing!
by (280 points)
@conduction9 its a basic 200w transformer, nothing special. But it does have a test mode that basically stays in "ON" mode so I can control it via the outlet.
by (280 points)
@sebrinasebum Thanks! Easy access from the hot tub.
by (2.4k points)
@conduction9 my transformer has a loop for the main relay. It can be bypassed, or a timer plugged in, or a photocell wired up. This way it doesn’t need to switch the full current. Also has taps for 12, 13, 14V for those long runs.

@veradi1704 thanks!

@veradi1704 I was thinking of the same but wanted to have a dimmer. Any suggestions?
by (280 points)
@litalitany I considered dimmable landscape lighting and found a couple of articles but abandoned the idea. You need a specific type of transformer to support it. Good luck!

I use the Ring smart transformer and some standard LED low voltage lights.
by (2.5k points)
@glossematics0 Carney what are your thoughts? Thinking about getting these.
by (3.1k points)
They work well. Ring transformer integrates with other Ring products and their motion alerts can trigger lights. I also liked being able to pick whatever “dumb” lights I wanted and then make them smart.

@glossematics0 Carney that’s the way to go. Works perfect

I have some old school basic transformer feeding some large gauge wire. Replaced all the bulbs with LED. The “photocell” is triggered by a relay on a raspberry pi, talking to openhab via mqtt. Civil dusk triggers them on, “Alexa bedtime” triggers them off.

But if we wanna be fancy about it. this is Halloween. There are four “landscaping lights” in this scene.
by (4.9k points)
@terpsichore ok! That’s awesome! I assume it takes a lot of effort to get that set up along your eves and programmed?
by (110 points)
Do you do the LOR thing at Christmas?
by (1.8k points)
@terpsichore which LED strips did you use ?
by (2.4k points)
@apprehensible yes a lot of effort. All custom. Probably 200 hours of work in it so far, including eleven lines fished through the attic.
by (2.4k points)
@glass3608 it’s xLights with Falcon controllers. I do a simple thing of changing patterns on various holidays. We may ramp up to a megatree and vertical outline on the house this fall.
by (2.4k points)
@skulduggery4 these are BTF brand SK6812 RGBW strips in an aluminum channel with a frosted cover. About 50 meters of it on the house. They fail a lot though. I’ve had to do a lot of repairs.
by (970 points)
@terpsichore friends dont let friends use strip lol . ive learned to strips fail
