Does nest and ring have an algorithm to not detect motion when it rains? Had a string of break ins Sunday night and a slew of people said their nest/ring cameras picked up nothing at all. It was raining. Neighbors car was stolen, right in front of her camera. I'm the only one who got video of the people in the act, 4 of them, and their vehicle. I use Dahua 4mp PoE cameras on a NVR. IMO nest and ring are garbage, and this scenario reinforce my opinion, but trying to figure out why they didn't work.

Exactly why its not worth having Ring or nest of you are serious about security. Wired is the only way to go

Ring and nest are fine, as a partial security, it's a video intercom, but some think it's a camera, it isnt

@vine totally agree. Ring are rubbish though. Best thing I done was ditch all the different devices I got from them. Eufy have come on so much and learnt from a lot of the mistakes Ring made. If I had to go wireless for any reason then would go with them in future.

Yes mate I bought ring, some one at the door, by the time I get the message and answer its Christmas, its shite

@vine exactly why I ditched them. The replacment has been perfect. Cant fault it one bit.

Motion zones not set correctly? Sensitivity too low?

It's not a camera, it's a door Bell, you should not expect it to do the job of a camera
by (4.9k points)
@vine yet everyone on here expects it to. However this happened some 5' from it. They even moved a basketball hoop before taking the car.
by (3.6k points)
Yes , you are right, are they on a busy road so had the setting down low, maybe they knocked off the motion part, but yes in short it ain't a camera it's just an intercom

12+ people have stated theirs caught nothing. I can see one or two having a misconfigured device, but for ALL of them to capture nothing? I mean they are some crappy products but I didn't think they were *that* bad.

@vine yes the doorbell one is great for the door area. the flood light cams are way better ‘as cameras ‘.

Yes mate, I have ring by the time it has alerted you that someone is at the door, its Christmas time

I doubt any programmer would write anything to not detect something, what would be the point? If it didn’t detect when raining they’d either fix it or declare it.
by (4.9k points)
@shawntashawwal51410 so their products are just plain shitty?
by (800 points)
@shawntashawwal51410 writing code for cameras and CCTV control rooms is my day job. Yes people do write code to not detect things. Otherwise the product gets binned because "it just alarms constantly" or some variation of this.

They are pir , so pick up heat maybe in the rain it cant pick up heat so well, I dont know , but its possible
by (800 points)
Pirs are generally much better than analytics at dealing with inclement weather.

Yes mate but it will only work if they detect movement across the cells, maybe this time it didnt detect across cell movements so didnt come on

So why do people bother with a device that only works some times, but not when you need it? Companies selling false hope?
by (3.6k points)
Because it's a gimmick, like most diy smart stuff, people do it because it's cool.

@cards I’m not here to argue for it or against. I fit CCTV for a living so I know the difference. I have the nest doorbell but wouldn’t depend on it for security.
by (1.5k points)
@elevation wow, what’s the chances? Lol. Are you specifically talking about the zoning? I’ve fitted hundreds of cameras, analogue and IP but never seen anything in the software where I can “ignore” certain things, possibly on a high end NVR, avigilon or similar but never in a camera. Regarding the monitoring room, I know the software can “look” for things like backpacks and track them in a mall etc but again, not ignore anything. Also, you’re not looking for a job in London are you?

BTW here's an image of the video I captured, from 25' away. Picture taken from my phone looking at the monitor of my PC. Of course, everyone thinks they need a mask these days so the criminals are in hog heaven, just "blending in". Really surprised there haven't been any bank robberies.

That's OK. My bosses "professionally" installed camera system caught nothing, absolutely nothing, when our yard was broken into.
by (4.2k points)
I'm not knocking professionally installed systems. I'm knocking the company he went with. Probably the cheapest he could get.

Sounds like that falls under the category of if you want something done right, do it yourself

Picture looks like a hazmat suit, maybe it was the government collecting Covid-19 infected items. They erased the video, after all that's what they do on TV to protect the victims.

Actually a lot of hoodies / sweat pant material reflect IR so glow on night vision and look white. For instance I'm wearing a black hoodie in this video. .

Ring or Nest doorbell cams are NOT security cameras. They fail about 50% of the time on motion events, for various reasons. They are not designed for that. You need a real surveillance system if your looking to record all events and never miss anything. So many people complain about this exact issue, but these are not security cams. They are doorbells that have a camera and happen to be able to record some motion events.
by (1.9k points)
@cence I agree, our family’s system is always recording. 4 1080 cams and one door bell cam can write about weeks worth of video before rewriting.

It’s possible they were just wise enough to spot the door bell cams but didn’t notice yours. There nothing wrong with a doorbell camera but I don’t like them to be the only camera.

Nest has continuous recording. Pay for it.

They use a cloud, that alone is reason not to use them for me.

Doesnt the motion detection require internet connect with the ring cameras?
