So we all know that the Nest doesn't *really* integrate well into SmartThings and stuff keeps changing. How to users feel about the Nest Thermostat vs Ecobee4? I have a new Nest in the box and can't decide whether to give it a go or not, or just get an Ecobee. Thoughts?

Get an ecobee

Yeah? You have found you like it better, or just the integration is better or what?

Here is the screenshot of what you can do in it

Nice. What model do you have? Looks like the only have the Ecobee Smart Assistant one and the 3 now?
by (760 points)
@tetherball it is the ecobee4 with alexa
by (370 points)
Yeah, I think they call that the SmartThermostat with Voice Control now. Don't really need the voice control, so maybe a 3 is the best route.

@tetherball check with your utility cause they may give you rebate. I just muted alexa cause I use google home around the house
by (760 points)
And it is called that now. Try to get one with the remote sensor too it is helpful if you have a room that gets warmer or colder

@schreck - That's actually the Ecobee 5 or second Gen Ecobee with Voice control.

Scrap them both n get a Honeywell system (individual radiator control)
by (370 points)
Why is that important? Don't really know.
by (870 points)
@tetherball if you just have a thermostat. The whole house is set to that temp if you want individual temps hotter or colder in certain rooms you can with Honeywell (however it ain't cheap) I've had my system about 3 years & had no bother at all. works with Alexa just say for example (Alexa bedroom 20 degrees) not sure about smart things mind I just use Alexa with mine

Since all of the programming can be done by SmartThings, I use a less than $100 zwave thermostat. On the thermostat basically you can only do heat, cool and manually set the temperature. With smartthings you can change the temp automatically when you come home, at certain times, etc. I figured why pay for a thermostat that can be programmed when smartthings does it anyway. The only problem is when you lose internet. But you can just set the temp manually.

I have nest. I have no need to integrate into smartthings. Unless you have lots of money spare at a time when people are concerned about the economy, I'd stick with what you have. *unless* you seriously need to integrate into ST
by (370 points)
@svetlana Well, the Nest is unopened, so I’m sure I could sell it and just buy an Ecobee.
by (2.5k points)
@tetherball you could. But you're still gonna be out of pocket. Its up to you at the end of the day. Nest is ok. I like it.

Perhaps you can do something with BadNest?

@whisker9129 looks interesting

That's from home assistant and there are more recent forks of this repo to integrate some bug fixes. Won't work directly with smartthings.

I still use my Nest, and though I can’t control it with SmartThings, I can control it with Alexa it with the Nest app. So I’m good. I never used Nest with the Wink app anyway — too much trouble.

Never owned Nest. Have 2 Ecobee3s with sensors and love them. Just switched to SmartThings and it integrated with it perfectly.

Depends. If you value seamless ST integration, and think Google will continue to try to build its own ecosystem around its own devices, then stay away from Nest. Nest is a great product (I am already fully invested in it) but if I was starting from scratch, I would take a hard look at Ecobee. I don’t trust Google to support 3rd party integrations or to not arbitrarily brick its hardware for that matter.

Replaced Nest with Ecobee. No regrets.
by (370 points)
@hylotheism Yeah? What do you like better about it? What is worse?
by (460 points)
Other than alexa and spotify, what got me into it is the potential savings of ecobee over nest because of its smart sensor.
