All local automations work but there's no access to the apps, which means that when I open the door, alarm will go off and there's no way to stop it. Any ideas besides grabbing a hammer and putting an end to ST misery?

Yeah, looks like I'm coming back up now too. Still totally unacceptable. The entire system should not be brought down because of a server issue. I hope Samsung has a good excuse, but this is really inexcusable laziness in design.

I'm sorry but IMO bringing the entire world down with you when there's a server glitch is not acceptable. I'd like to know the root cause and what steps are being taken to prevent it in the future.

Thomas I know you're speaking figuratively, but your whole world should not be dependent on your home automation system. All my stuff has a manual backup, so if it goes down, I just go old school until it's back up and running. Not a big deal. Like driving a luxury car, and when it needs a repair, they loan you a cheap base model car. The world keeps turning and life goes on. Home automation should be a luxury and a convenience, not something you're dependent on.

You're not wrong, @
naumann,
but it's no solace when you're standing in the dark at 4:30 AM, a crying baby in your arms, fumbling desperately for the manual workaround (which, incidentally, didn't work for me and I'm not sure why). If it had been my wife, rather than me, we'd be uninstalling SmartThings this morning. For better or worse, people have high expectations around consumer electronics. It's not asking too much to be protected locally from global server issues. It's a design flaw.

Thomas definitely a rough scenario, and I can understand why you're upset. I just think it's important to remember that no system is 100% reliable. In my 3 years of using Smartthings, I've had more power outages than I've had Smartthings outages. Should I switch to solar so that I don't have to be dependent on some power company to provide me with electricity? Hell. One time a few years ago we were without water in our house for an entire day because of something that failed at the city water plant. Should I start collecting rain water so that I don't have to depend on the city for my water? Bottom line is that no system 100% fail proof. This is a "free" service provided by Samsung and I have generally found it to be pretty reliable. Even if I was paying a monthly fee for it (which I would gladly do! ), it's still reliable enough that these outages would not bother me one bit. By the way. Please don't take any offense to this. I enjoy the friendly debate, and there's no real right or wrong opinion to any of this.

Thomas it may be a design flaw, but it's a known one. Unless you have all your devices set up to run locally, then you are susceptible to a full failure. Switch to Hubitat or something else that isn't cloud based
