Grocery question: I use WalMart grocery pickup weekly for our groceries. You cannot pay with cash and do grocery pickup. So does anyone else use grocery pickup and just not do a cash envelope for groceries?!? I feel like I spend less doing the pickup because I don’t go in the store and see things I want but don’t need.

I do this as well ( for groceries) it works so well for me and I spend far less that what I do when I go into the store.

@braynard right! Me too!

@krueger. Some weeks I have to just throw something in there just to make the minimum for pick up!

I use electronic envelopes for gas and target (because I do pick up there). You could try that! I made a form to keep in my binder to track it just like a regular envelope for me. Happy to share if you want.

I use my checking account to cover my Walmart grocery pickup and then budget about $60 for miscellaneous groceries throughout the week for milk, bread, etc.

Pay cash for Walmart gift cards maybe?

I leave grocery money in my bank account & use Walmart pickup. I just make sure I track my spending accordingly.

‍♀️ I just leave the grocery budget on my debit card and then track.

I do the same version of this through Kroger. I just use my debit card and account for it in my books. I DEFINITELY spend way less, I am able to look at my cupboards while assembling my list, and my time is worth the fee to me.

I have a checking account with 1 debit card labeled gas/groceries. The only $ in that account is what’s budgeted for this exactly

@chemisorb530 that’s a great idea!

We have a credit card for things like this and gas. When we charge on it the money is moved from the appropriate envelope into the credit card envelope. Then later that week I deposit the money and pay the card off.

My grocery “envelope” is actually it’s own separate checking account for exactly this reason. I spend WAY LESS when I am not in the store. I work on my shopping list all week and tweak things and rearrange meal plans to fit my budget this way.

I do, I just budget it and keep it in the checking.

I pull money out of my envelope and put it back in my checking account after I pick up my groceries.

I leave that money in my checking account. I put the grocery pickup on my credit card to earn cash back rewards, and then pay it off. I created a tracker to track how much I've spent and how much is left in my "envelope".

Just a thought but if you really are consistent with Wal-Mart how about a re loadable WM card. Then you can use that as your "envelope".

Use checking account and then replenish with cash. Just make sure you track it.

Groceries and gas stay in my checking account. Everything else is placed in a different area.

I do pickup with target, Kroger and Walmart. All the same morning. I take cash out for Aldi if I go. They’re all next to each other, so it’s easy.

I buy a gift card for my groceries and just use that for check out process

I’m going to get a prepaid Visa card from my bank and put 2 or 3 hundred dollars on it. That way I can shop online and pull money from the appropriate envelope and deposit it and reload the card.

I get cash out but then immediately deposit it if I swiped my card for that category

We have a transfer envelope. I’ll budget and order groceries online (only like once a month though, usually I go to aldi) then my hubby swings by the back and deposit the cash otw to work

I would have a grocery budget for pickup and a separate small budget for cash based on how you typically spend.

This doesn’t help with payment method, but if you use the Shopkick app for your Walmart grocery pickup you get 2, 000 kicks. You can cash out for a $25 gift card at 6, 250 kicks so this is like getting $8 cash back on every order.

I use cashless envelopes where I have an index card with my monthly budget for each category, write down what I spend, and keep track that way. I use Walmart Pickup and do not have cash that I can take out readily.

We do a separate sub-checking account and money comes directly out of that instead of using cash

I still use a grocery cash envelope, but I pay with a credit card and transfer the money to an online spending envelope. At the end of the month I pay off the credit card with the cash in the online spending envelope.

We do cash but keep our grocery money in checking. :)

Purchase a gift card or a prepaid card.
by (110 points)
@percale4999 I don’t think Walmart grocery lets you use prepaid cards but you can use a gift card.

I use Walmart grocery pickup every week too. My grocery budget is $400 per month. I just leave that amount in my checking account

I am trying something different this month. I took out my grocery cash and put it in the envelope. I use my paid off credit card for groceries because it gets me 2% cash back. Today I went to Costco, paid with the card, then I took the cash out and put it into the Pay Credit Card envelope. My plan is to only charge what I have cash for and then take the cash and deposit it to pay the card 2 days before the bill is due. I think I can handle this responsibility but we will see on Feb 24.

@radiometer this is what I do

I try to use cash for everything, but I often don't have my envelopes with me when I need them. So I use my AmEx card, and I have an envelope section that says "back to AmEx". I take the cash for what I spent out of its category and put it in there. Then I use that cash at the end of the month to pay off my AmEx in full. But this way I only have to go to the bank once

Groceries is the one account that I leave in the bank. I have a completely separate account just for food that has a different ATM card for. It works for me because I only shop at the Walmart Pick up.

Miko does this. She has an online envelope for that.

We do pick up. Then subtract that amount from out budgeted amount. Take what’s left in cash.
