Does someone have a problem with the Kwikset 912 Z-Wave SmartCode Electronic Touchpad? I bought few time ago but I gave up to use because I need to replace the batteries every week. Any suggestion on how to fix it?

I have this same model and I haven't changed the batteries in probably 3 months. Usually devices that run through batteries that fast are indicating poor mesh networks of whatever protocol its using. You might consider throwing an outlet or 2 between the lock and your hub then rebuilding/repairing the mesh.

Thanks! Any specific outlet/brand? I have very close a z wave wall GE switch and also one GE outlet adapter.

I completely agree. A strong zwave mesh is a must. That would be the first thing I would look at. I have this same model and my batteries are about 8 months old and I’m showing at 40%

@gerard68 I'd just look at something zwave plus. As long as its AC powered itll repeat the signal and create or expand the mesh. I have an inovelli plug in module I really like but there are cheaper options that would also work. There are even some devices that only work as a repeater so they are smaller since they dont have outlets built in

Do you think that Aeon AEOTEC Z-wave Range Extender Repeater DSD37-ZWUS would be a good option?

@gerard68 yea I think that would be a very good option

@gerard68 Another thing to note is that if you do have a z-wave repeater relatively close to your lock, but still have batteries draining quickly (This was my case with a different Kwikset lock), it might be due to a faulty z-wave chip in the lock. I contacted the company and they sent me a replacement unit. That fixed the issue for me. I've gone 3+ months now on the original batteries in the replacement unit and they are still reporting >70% battery.

Kwikset are terrible. I switched to Schlage.

When you manually turn the lock is there any resistance when the bolt goes into the door jam? That will suck your battery dry faster than anything. If it’s not smooth you need to make some mechanical adjustments to the door handle (not the lock)

Yes, I had this problem.

I have the Kwikset 910 (Z-wave, not Z-Wave Plus) locks on five doors in three houses. They all work flawlessly on 4 Energizer Lithium AA's. The trick is to use Lithium batteries on the units, as Lithium batteries are best for high drain applications. Since this unit doesn't even have to slide a deadbolt into and out of place like mine does, I'm not sure how/why you're draining a set of batteries every week. My lithium batteries usually last at least half a year. At our lake house, the batteries make it all the way through the winter and around to the spring, and usually through the season before needing to be swapped.

Are you using rechargeable batteries?

@compel nope. Without the z-wave function the batteries last months

If you install a AC powered Zwave switch nearby it may reduce the battery usage.

I have two a floor above my hub in two bedroom doors, and a z-wave switch in the upper floor hallway for repeating. I use good, name brand batteries, and have no issue with excessive battery change. I don't think they've ever needed to be re-paired or anything either.

It may be a bad zwave module. Some of them go bad after about 2 years and increase battery consumption. Yale lever locks have excellent battery life in general. Combine them with lithium AA batteries and it should last a very long time.

I have this lock model and the batteries last. i dunno, it's been that long. Probably over 6 months. It is right next two a bank of 3 Zooz Z-wave switches though. Initially, the lock bolt was not aligned well so I drilled out the hole and aligned the plate better.

You may have them set to extensive polling or have weak z-wave signal. I have Kwikset 888 at home and in a short term rental and they work great.
