Right now I have a nest thermostat with smartthings. Fortunately I integrated them a long time ago and haven't moved to a google account so it still works with smartthings. Next week we are moving into a new house. Chances are that I'm sticking with smartthings and I'm looking for a thermostat that has native integration. I don't mind installing device handlers and apps but I'd prefer native integration and if possible, local control. Smartthings has a list of officially supported thermostats. I was learning towards ecobee until I saw it was cloud to cloud. There are a few zigbee or zwave ones that I assume would work local. What experience do you all have and what would you recommend for a connected thermostat? The nest is staying behind most likely so I'm shipping for a new one.

Verify what your HVAC already has before choosing. For instance my system, a 3 year old American Standard won't work correctly without the manufacturers smart thermostat (variable speed motors air purification etc. ) I'd do an ecobee but I'd lose about half the features of the system.

@anatolia7046 I think it has a Honeywell right now but I'll do some checking. Theres a Honeywell that works with ST so if that's the one it might work as is and not be worth replacing.

@imperturbation91375 yes Honeywell has a very nice ZWave thermo. But if its the one I'm thinking about. The ecobee should work too.

I had a CT-101, from Lowe's. It worked flawlessly. Full Zwave. It didn't have location features, was the only catch.

I have 8 of these and they work well. I use location features through ST so that shortcoming doesn't affect me. Also the bonus with these is they can be powered by c-wire or battery.

@whaley0 like @hague said, it doesn't matter if the thermostat has location or not, ST does therefore you have it. I use GoControl (also from Lowe's), listed as "smart" but it's as dumb as they come - but it's Z-wave. All the smarts come from ST, like changing temps based on mode and who is home or not. Works great.

I'd also highly recommend you pay for Rboy smartapps - I have all my thermostats based on either motion in that zone or the mode the hub is in. Plus it allows you to use any other sensor with temperature to drive any thermostat. For instance, the motion detector in my son's room drives the temperature for the hear upstairs when he is sleeping because the thermostat is down the hall and his rokm can get a few degrees colder in the winter.

I have a nest in the house which is working with st still and a ct-101 in the garage. Never had an issue with the ct-101 good option for the price just not as nice to look at

I’ve been pleased with the efficiency benefits from my nests. I despise the issues google has caused with integrations. I’ve been highly considering ecobee myself. Supposedly I should be getting similar efficiency improvements with it. You may not get that with some of the direct zwave type thermostats but you may be able to do some automation that will get you some.

I use Eccobee, and have been pleased. Works well with both Smart Things and Alexa.

I use Honeywell 9585 and have 4 in my primary home and 1 in my lake home. Works like a charm! Love them!

Does ST have local integration yet with any thermostat? I thought it was just lights using the built in DTH and the simple lighting app for the moment

@imperturbation91375 Robichaud maybe I need to do more research but I thought if a device used the native device handler and was zwave or zigbee it could run local. But maybe that's only smart lighting, I dont know for sure but I assumed thermostats could work local.

@imperturbation91375 just looked it up. Smart lights and smartthings home monitor only. If you want all local a platform like hubitat would do it. Then link the devices into ST with the hubconnect app and you can use all devices in both environments

Have been using an ecobee 3 lite for about two years now and love it. With a couple of the ecobee local wireless sensors, it's more than paid for itself and keeps the house comfy all year long. I do have it linked to my ST system, so I could use that to tweak temperatures, but primarily use that for remote monitoring because the ecobee sensors are so effective.
