I've picked up loads of tips from here for visiting Budapest next weekend. However, I was wondering if anybody could recommend how to book the hop on/off bus (or just pay there) and I've seen a travel pass mentioned, how do you purchase/use that? Thanks in advance

We bought our on/off bus ticket from the guides on the street (by the funicular railway but they might be other places. ) we got train and bus tickets from the purple machines in the streets as its cheaper than from driver but we didn't have a travel card

I wouldn't recommend buying from the touts on the street, they tried to charge us far more than the online price to purchase and became quite rude and shouted at us when we didn't buy, we had to pass the vendor every day as it was right outside our apartment and on the day we left he said we owed him money and shouted after us down the street as we walked away, even though we didn't end up buying or using the hop on/off busses. It was quite upsetting and the only thing that disappointed me about Budapest.

I got the two day hop on and off bus tickets from the guides on the street, came with a free river cruise and good competitive prices!

We bought a travel card at the nearest metro station, less than £10 for a week and covers the metro, buses and trams but not the hop on/off tourist bus. If you are buying one of those, take your passport with you when you buy it so they can add your ID to the ticket, there are no swipe machines like the London underground so if you do get stopped and checked your ID is on there. We used the metro every day and used the tram to go along the riverside

We bought ours from the official sightseeing page - you just need to print it off and show it to the driver!

If you're using the open-top sightseeing ones you can buy online or at the bus stops from the staff. If you want a general travelpass for public transport (trams, metro, ferry) you can get them from the airport at the travel info desk like we did or get them in stations or tourism offices within the city.
