Small steps. Walk for minutes, next day add a few more minutes. I love walking!
by (1k points)
@causey329, start on a very level place. An indoor track or gym is great. Good sneakers are needed.
by (8k points)
@causey329 start by parking further from the store, walk to the end of your driveway, walk half the mall, go to Home Depot and walk up and down the aisles. Maybe you have to push the cart to do it, but start moving!
by (4.5k points)
I do that all the time. I was just giving the person that posted this thread suggestions. I am walking anywhere from 3-5 miles per day. And have lost 70 lbs since last February.

And last week I joined the gym. In the same time period I have loss 61 pounds and went from a 4X and 5x to a 2X.

If you can be happy just taking baby steps toward your goal those steps can get bigger as time goes on. Park farther away in the parking lot, instead of the massive one shopping trip and carrying the load in the house make it a couple of trips (more steps) have a glass of water with one meal for a start. Go up and down the stairs an extra step. Just a couple of thoughts.

I have lost a total of 100 lbs . the first 60 I lost was with little to no working out . It was changing what I ate in order to give me the energy to start working out . you CAN do this little by little 1 day at a time.

When out shopping try to park further away so you have more of a walking distance. I tend to walk my dog often during the day to get the extra walking in. A stationary bike works well too.

Yeah—like others said—small steps over time add up. Not too extreme depriving or you will crash & burn. Make it a LIFESTYLE change! You can have a sweet treat but make it LITE—like chocolate Pizelle (Aldi’s) with a little lite cool whip on top. Small bites. Chew slowly & savor the experience. Eating more fresh/steamed veggies will make you FEEL BETTER emotionally & physically and contribute to long-term health. After a few weeks or months, you will feel SO EMPOWERED and proud of yourself. No regrets!

Best advice I can give is just start. That’s the hardest part. Do more than you do now, start walking a mile a day, drink more water, eat less. You might thing it’s not going to help but any progress is progress! Good luck!

Find a podcast or album you love and go for walks when you can! This is a great way to start and you can go at your own pace. Find somewhere flat to start. And just start with WW. Track everything. Prepare snack baggies of zero point foods you enjoy. Look at them as a treat. “I get some grapes now! ”

Start with walking. You will be amazed how the weight will start to drop off as long as you eat healthy. Your motivation will increase and you will be able to (and want! ) to do more. Some people do better with baby steps, others going full out. See what works best for you and don’t ever give up!

It's no secret for the past several decades that walking is one of the safest things to do. For most people, they have to do both - change their eating habits and get up and move around. There are flabby skinny people, too, out there. Once you lose some weight, chances are you'll WANT to get up and move around more and more. If you've ever watched the people on "My 600 lb. Life", you'll see that even the biggest people on the show start by walking very short distances.

Someone who is very heavy actually has an easier time shedding the initial fat from small steps like a decrease in calorie/sugar intake and a little move movement like a short walk. Individuals with less to loose will need bigger changes in order to loose and also loose at a slower rate.

Don’t expect everything to happen all at once. You need to learn to breath first. Start with the program loose weight, when the knees and the breathing are less painful start walking and a little resistance training. You can not change your entire life over night, that will result in failure. I started with replacing my protein with chicken breast, and reduced potatoes. Found an alternative to honey in my coffee, and used low points dips for fruit and vegetables. As I saw results my blood pressure went down, my knees didn’t hurt going up stairs, my chest stopped hurting. Then I was able to focus on moving. I’m down 50 pound at 61 years old

When you have a lot to lose it comes off fairly easy. Small changes make big differences. The less you have to lose the harder the fight. Try this program (really try) for three weeks. You will be amazed.

Focus on one thing, start with food, this will allow to lose some weight. Once you start that add walking, not extremely far but a little challenging. Once you do that pick another goal that is further. Try to change it further every week. This way you can add as you go. While you see your accomplishments.

I’ve lost 63 lbs that I’ve actually kept off by just eating better and exercising. Stay disciplined and focused! You’ll find what works for you and when you do, nothing can stop you but you! Good luck in your journey!

When I started, I couldn't even walk to the mailbox without getting out of breath and my heart pounding. I lost 35-40# just following the food plan, tracking and staying within my points. Then I started exercising. Short walks at first, then longer walks. Then working out with some You Tube videos. Fabulous 50s, Leslie Sansone and Body Project. Also some Silver Sneakers You Tube videos, which are seated exercise and a little bit easier to help ease into exercise, Now I crave it, and I feel sluggish if I skip a day. If I can do it, anybody can. Just start with whatever small amount you're comfortable with and keep going. You can do this! The hardest part is starting.

Just walk, walk, walk. Do what you can do. do it again tomorrow & tomorrow & tomorrow. You’ll see the weight come off a bit faster by just sticking to your points but adding the walking. I started slow to build up my stamina. soon I averaged 10, 000 steps a day. the weather got too cold to walk so I bought a manual treadmill. I stayed determined. you can di it too! #1 motivation is attend the workshops EVERY week. if you don’t care for the coach, switch to another time.

+29 votes
by (590 points)
Start by eating half of what you normally would - when eating out, ask for a to go box and immediately put half of whatever you ordered in it. Do the same at home, only eat half of anything on the plate and don’t compensate. Try to cut out bread as much as possible. Order burgers without it. Then work in some exercise - start with a buddy, it is much easier if you have someone to do it with that will keep you honest. Taking the first step is hard, don’t criticize yourself and don’t make the plan hard. You can do it!

I have been doing WW since November 1st. Lost 17 pounds pretty easy. Not much exercise involved. Getting a little stuck so I am trying to do the gym a couple of times a week to see if I can jumpstart. I think with all the holidays since November 1st that 17 pounds is a "win" for me. I hope to lose more of course and will keeping counting those points. It does work but we have to be committed to it!

One day at a time, one small goal at a time, one healthy choice at a time. I began with eating habits only and by following the WW plan, lost about 85lbs before I decided it was time to start being more active too. After getting a routine with adding exercise, I started looking at my water intake more seriously. Now I'm looking at daily activity levels, not just exercising (taking the stairs more, parking farther away, more movement at my desk job). More than two years in. but I'm down 132lbs and so so much healthier. I have a ways to go but just want to keep making the healthier choices every single day. The rest will come! Good luck to you, you've got this!

I'm right there with you. I have a spinal condition, I need a knee replacement to name a few problems. I started by just doing ONE thing I didn't before until I added a lot of activites. I have a Fitbit and I walked one 250 steps per day for a week. Then I increased that each week. You may be able to do more but I found that if I did too much I experienced so much pain I didn't do anything the next week. I'm now up to 500 steps every hour and started doing water aerobics. I can go all out and it doesn't affect my joints. I never thought I could be this active but now every day activities like walking up stairs and grocery shopping is a breeze! And I'm almost 60 years old!

As plenty here have said, just stick to your points and the weight will start to come off and make it easier to move and you’ll feel more fit in general. I find that small changes are more achievable for me. I’d recommend a fit bit or even a cheap pedometer. You don’t necessarily need to make an effort to exercise each day. I have a serious issue with motivating myself to work out. But if you get a baseline of how many steps you get in a day, it’s easy to give yourself a goal of maybe 500 more the next day. I find myself parking a bit farther from the store entrance or offering to do small tasks throughout the day to get more steps. It adds up! And if you get something that syncs with the WW app it adds to your fit points

You have to start somewhere! Start small and work up! If today you drive to pick up your mail. start walking to pick up. A year ago I was 120 lbs over weight and started with walking even if some days it was only 5-10 min. Now I work out with a trainer several times a week. I’m down 60 lbs and 6-8 sizes. You can do it but start small and work up.

It’s really primarily about the food, not the working out, in terms of weight loss. I’m pretty out of shape but I’ve been doing well and getting stronger with yoga and barre classes, which are low impact. I think with exercise, you have to start slow (short walks, gentle activity) and build up.

If you lose a pound, visualize 4 sticks of butter that are no longer part of you. When you lose 5lbs, pick up a bag of sugar in one hand to feel what you have lost. When you are down by 10 pounds, walk the perimeter of the supermarket carrying a bag of flour in a shopping bag. Remind yourself by doing this that you have shed this weight from your body. I have lost 60 lbs, and still take that walk with SIX bags of flour from time to time. It keeps me focused.

Just decide you want to get healthy and begin. WW is a healthy eating lifestyle. It takes time to adjust your thinking to not eating tons of food. But WW is the best way to do it. The best way is to attend workshops. Helpful leaders and members to encourage you and give you tips. This is a good group, but a lot of people incorporate other methods, too. I suggest following WW and stay away from other things like IF. You need to not be hungry and learn portion sizes. Good Luck!
The Weight Watchers Group is where you can always find questions, answers, advice, reviews & recommendations from other community members about recipes, meal ideas, and tips for the Weight Watchers diet.
