Question friends.  My daughter and I had been slowly trying restaurants from other countries.Question friends. My daughter and I had been slowly trying restaurants from other countries. We are lucky to live in NY and can find most countries on one block.  true story. But being under quarantine has left us unable to try new things. So my question is this. Do you have any recipes that are popular in your culture? We are Italian and Irish so we've had more than enough of that. We tried LOTS of chinese, Korean and Japanese. A tiny bit of French, German, and Polish. We did not care for Indian or Halal food. Since we're home and not much else to do, we can experiment with cooking.

At our house. We have a bowl in the kitchen that had slips of paper in it, . on those slips of paper we put down on the slip of paper a recipe or food we want from another country . Once a week we will "travel the world" by drawing a slip and cooking that meal.

Indian food is delicious if you get the right dishes from a good cook. I love butter chicken which is also called Chicken Tikka Masla in many places. Don't give up on it. millions of English can't be wrong about having a curry!
by (3k points)
@macao agree both butter chicken and tikka masala are great dishes. Any chance you have a “healthy” recipe for Butter chicken?
by (12.2k points)
@divot replace the cream with fat free greek yogurt. It cuts the calories way down. It still tastes good.

@macao I think Indian food uses spices as well as any. Love it and I can’t eat “hot, peppery” food.
by (12.2k points)
@sandal make it mild. I do. I'm not a fan of hot either.

@macao Brilliant! Thank You

In Creole it’s called griot- which is fried pork chunks. To make it healthier, I air fry or bake the pork. It’s usually served with haitian rice and bean and fried plantains. There is a sauce you can make to put over all parts of the meal or whatever you want called Ti Malice sauce.

How about Danish meatballs - traditionally eaten with boiled potatoes, veg and gravy (although in our house we have them with pasta). 1 lb 5% minced pork, 1 finely chopped onion, 1 cup of milk, 1 cup of flour, 1 egg, salt n pepper(you can add garlic/curry powder if you feel adventurous) but this is just the basic. Butter for frying. Put meat in a bowl and make a well. Add all the other ingredients in the well and mix ingredients in the well first and gradually incorporate the mince. When mixed well you should be able to make a ball easily without mince to sticky - if it feels too wet add some flour to the mince and mix. Use a tablespoon of mince for each meatball(can be as big or as small as you like). Use butter(I use lighter option butter) to fry - NOT oil/lard - this is a Danish meatball. Let butter go brown before adding meatballs to frying pan. Don’t forget to flatten meatball slightly. Meatball should be brown on both sides and cooked through. Velbekommen. Oh and they are even better cold

@thames2932 delish!

@thames2932. That sounds amazing!
by (240 points)
@thames2932 My husband is Danish and I love Frikadeller! Don’t forget to serve with the pickled beets too YUM! Anytime we have made this for our friends everyone loved it
by (1k points)
@wyly43 we also have pickled cuecumber - I’ll put up the recipe a bit later as I’m sure your husband will remember that too and is so easy - we usually eat that with the cold meatballs or on liverpate
by (240 points)
@thames2932 what a coincidence because I accidentally bought an extra cucumber and I planned on making Agurkesalat today! I may be American but I think I was supposed to be born in Denmark LOL! I love the language though I am not very good at it
by (1k points)
@wyly43 1 cuecumber sliced finely, 1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of vinegar - i tend to use white wine vinegar but malted will do too. Mix the vinegar and sugar(i imagine you could experiment with stevia for lower ww point count) - mix to taste - we like it quite sweet - in a bowl, and a bit of pepper. Then just put the cuecumber slices into the liquid and leave to rest in the fridge. Ready to eat when you are - but best after a day or so.
by (2.8k points)
@thames2932 That sounds really good. I want to try the monk fruit sugar with it.
by (1k points)
@radiotelephony please forgive my ignorance- what is monk fruit sugar?
by (1k points)
@wyly43 you are an honorary Dane
by (2.8k points)
@thames2932 I keep seeing people talking about it on here. I haven't tried it yet. But it supposed to be a better sugar substitute.
by (1k points)
@radiotelephony I’m in the UK so that’s probably why I have never seen it
by (2.8k points)
@thames2932 I've only ever seen it on Amazon. I'm afraid to buy a big bag and not like it.
by (1k points)
@radiotelephony ooh I’ll have a look on there

I'm trying to figure out why my post has an angry face. I don't think i said something wrong ?
by (2k points)
@radiotelephony someone probably didn't realize that they hit that button I hope
by (180 points)
@radiotelephony that's me. it's like you have something against indian and/or halal foods so . I just hope I am wrong . but the way you said it, why you need to mention "halal". it's not a nationality. I am french, married to a pakistani man and we own 2 "halal food" restaurants in Ireland. I fell in love with this country and people here
by (2.8k points)
@reprehensible22060 Because when i went in the restaurant thats how they had it listed on the wall. I didn't know what else to call it. I did try it. It was rice and chicken. The white sauce they used was delicious. But the spice on the chicken and the rice was not that great. But that's my opinion. I'm sure others love it.
by (180 points)
@radiotelephony oh ok, I personnaly never saw food listed like that. So sorry for misunderstanding you. Sure your taste, your choice and your freedom. Nothing bad to unlike a kind of food.
by (3.4k points)
@reprehensible22060 it listed like that in NY and I seen it many times.

Sounds like a good experiment. Just curious what type of Indian food didn't you like: Northern or Southern ?
by (3.4k points)
@tejeda I don’t know what I had but I didn’t care for what I tried. I’m open but. Or a curry fan and that not exclusive to Indian. Many Caribbean foods have curry and don’t like it. What’s the difference with northern and southern?
by (2.8k points)
@tejeda Gosh its been ages since i tried it. I dont even remember what i had. I do remember having one glass of wine and getting very tipsy. I never had wine that strong.

Can you explain what you mean by you don’t care for halal food? I’m confused by this.
by (2.8k points)
@northumbrian This is what is posted in the store i shop at. I only know what they offer.
by (2.8k points)
@northumbrian Also there are food trucks on just about every corner specializing in Halal food. Well they used to be there anyway
by (430 points)
@radiotelephony halal means “ allowed or permissible “ In Islam this excludes meat that is not slaughtered in the halal way, pork and alcohol. Everything else water, fruit , vegetables, bread. is halal. So you already eat halal food since it is just a word meaning allowed.
by (2.8k points)
@northumbrian  i couldn't tell you why its like that. Maybe its a NY thing? That's just what its called here. This store specifically the owners are nice people. Went to school with my husband. They're from Yemen. But the Halal food signs are in all the restaurants. Even the food trucks. But i know they sell chicken. And lamb. So.
by (430 points)
@radiotelephony it means the meat is slaughtered a certain way. ( facing Mecca and prayed over) it’s like Jewish kosher meat is slaughtered a single way. But halal literally translates as permissible. In halal food places all the meat will be halal and no pork or alcohol in the food.

Want a MN hot dish recipe?
by (2.8k points)
@mumps Sure. I really just want to introduce my kids to something new. Something outside their comfort zone of chicken nuggets and burgers.

Have never figured the points, but this is my Grandmas recipe
by (2.8k points)
@mumps That seems simple. I love an easy meal.
by (2.8k points)
@mumps What ive been doing is just saving my points for when we go out. Its not very often so i figure i can splurge. But now that we're not going anywhere i am making these recipes the way their meant to be cooked. If we like it then I'll try to figure out a healthy version. But im only trying something once a week.

Why don't you like halal foods? You don't like meats killed in God's name rather than murdered violently?
by (29.5k points)
@koonce18630 Let guess, you are not of northern European decent?
