Hey friends.  My hubs was just dx with high cholesterol.Hey friends. My hubs was just dx with high cholesterol. If I put him on WW, can it specifically address that issue for him? I know it will lower his weight and BMI, thereby lowering his cholesterol anyway. But I’m looking to be really specific.

Beth- I would ask his doctor - that way you get the correct answer from the “expert”. Best wishes to him!

High cholesterol is often hereditary and can be high even with a low cholesterol diet

Beth, if his high cholesterol is caused by what he eats, WW can improve it dramatically if he makes healthier food choices. However, it is possible to lose weight and reduce BMI and still have cholesterol issues not caused by food.

Thanks. We are definitely going to be talking with his doctor as this was a preliminary screening.

After being on WW for a month, my cholesterol levels improved. My Dr. said if I continue on this route, she would possibly consider taking me off medication which I have been on for years; so yes WW can help with Cholesterol (in my opinion)

My cholesterol dropped close to 70 pts within a year of starting WW. Between the diet changes and becoming more active (especially high cardio workouts), my labs all turned around significantly.

It will improve if he follows the program, he has to decide to do it.

My cholesterol never changed after 40lbs, still on the same meds. I believe mine to be hereditary, both my parents were on meds and they were never over weight.
by (2.7k points)
You are correct. Genetics also plays a big part in one’s health.

It depends what you eat and your activity. Mine lowered.

Yes because it’s a low saturated fat diet and that’s the kind of fat that cause high cholesterol

Healthy diet. Vinegar daily the mother.
by (2.3k points)
Vinegar can destroy your esophagus, even very diluted so be careful with that.

Yes, because A well balanced diet low in fat and sugar combined with 150 mins per week of moderate or 75 mins of vigorous activity can reduce cholesterol.

I have high cholesterol and my doctor says to eat a lot of plants. So, with WW I eat about 7 servings of veggies/fruits daily. Also take Salmon oil 3x daily. Also, no red meat or pork products or fried foods. I get checked again in July so here’s to hoping it lowers the numbers.

Weight watchers will lower his cholesterol unless he is a smoker

by (47.5k points)
Cigarette smoke raises levels of LDL, or "bad"cholesterol, and a blood fat called triglycerides. Those cause waxy plaque to build up in your arteries. At the same time, it lowers HDL, or "good"cholesterol -- the kind that prevents plaque from forming.

WW is a great program. If your husband follows the program and makes healthy food choices and exercise it can potentially bring his cholesterol down. However if his cholesterol problem is hereditary then the program will still be great for his over all health and his heart but may not lower his cholesterol.

He needs to do it for himself, you can help, but if he isnt on board the program it will be hard to sustain. WW doesnt choose the foods for you. It simply gives you the tools to help you get healthier. Google or go to pinterest and look up cholesteral lowering foods and add them to your meal WW meal plan. Everyday is a new fresh start. We all get into that frame of mind at one point or another. I reread the post I share with other people that are just starting out or need refocusing when I need to refocus myself. Maybe something on this will help you. The good thing is it is a new day! Today you start fresh. Today is your first day! Welcome to WW! Here are some basic tips TRACK every lick, bite, and taste. The program does not work if you don't track. You can lie to the tracker but your body knows what it ate. MEASURE breakout the measuring spoons, cups and the food scale. Don't eyeball it you will be wrong. EXERCISE find something you love. You won't do if you hate it. I personally like walking, dancing when the weather says don't walk, and cardio-drumming. I do cardio-drumming from YouTube videos. Nothing is more satisfying than hitting things with sticks. If you need to start easy try marching in front of the TV during commercials and then build yourself up to a whole show. MEAL PREP I always keep a big bin of chopped onions, a big bin of chopped bell peppers, and a big bin of chunks of cooked chicken breast. I also have staples like cucumbers, tomatoes, spinach, pasta, laughing cow triangle cheese, olive oil farro, tzatziki sauce, garlic, eggs, apples, oranges, bananas, berries, whatever is in season. This way when I am hungry I have healthy choices. Breakfast omlette throw together garlic, onions, peppers, eggs and then fold it over a cut up wedge of laughing cow cheese. For lunch a very easy tzatziki chicken. Chicken, bell pepper, onions, cucumber, tomatoes. Toss it with tzatziki sauce. You can put it on a pita, eat it without the pita, or what I like to do is RIP up half a pita and mix it in after the tzatziki is mixed in. For dinner maybe a salad with the spinach, onions, peppers, chicken. Etc. Maybe pasta or rice with anything on the list. The most important tip is KINDNESS be as nice to yourself as you are to others. When you are giving your self negative back talk, ask yourself if that is how you would speak to a friend and give yourself a break. I almost forgot. zero points does not mean zero calories. For instance, a banana is zero points but if you over banana you are gonna get yourself into trouble. EAT you need to eat within 10 below and 5 above your points level. If consistently under eat your body thinks there is a famine and holds on to every ounce of weight it can until the famine is over. Under eating and over exercising is a bad combo. If you stick to 5 below and 5 above it works better. for me at least. You are not alone in this. A lot of us join with that "last resort" mentality. But don't think that way. Take a nice before picture with a big smile because today is the day your life changed for the better. You are gonna get healthy, you are gonna be fit. You are gonna breathe better. You just need to give it some time. This is a slow process but it is a process that works. I'm excited for you taking this big step towards a healthier life. You might want to sit down and write yourself a love letter stating why you joined WW and what your long term goals are, how you will accomplish them (small term goals) and what you will be able to accomplish when you get there! I personally would like to be able to get up off the floor without having to hoist myself up on the couch like I am climbing Mount Everest. That is one of the things future me will be able to do. Last tip. don't hang out in the kitchen. Eat there, cook there, clean the dishes. But if it isn't kitchen related get out of there it is too tempting. Also do not compare your journey to anyone else's. We are all different. We all have different metabolisms. So mind your own journey and don't worry that someone else lost more that week. It won't help your progress.

@salespeople Oh I’m not making him. Lol. I’m already on it and then this week he was dx so I was just information gathering.

One thing to know about lowering his cholesterol, LDL is the bad cholesterol. HDL is the good cholesterol. HDL acts like garbage trucks picking up the bad LDL and eliminating it from body. He should shoot to get that HDL number to at least 60. Exercise will help to raise the HDL, thereby giving him more garbage trucks to get more bad LDL. Fish oil pills are also proven to be helpful, ask his Dr about them. Become a master label reader, no chips, etc. Cutting red meat, fatty dairy and concentratig on lean proteins like poultry, fish and generous portions of vegetables and fruit will be key to his success.

Eating oatmeal every day lowered mine about 20 points over the course of a year. I grew tired of oatmeal and blueberries so now I bake oatmeal bread for the week and eat that every day. Another natural way to lower cholesterol is to take Red Yeast Rice and CoQ 10. Mine was 260 and between those 2 things, I hover around 212-220. But it took a while to come down that far.
by (2.4k points)
@involution please share your oatmeal bread recipe
by (2.4k points)
I don't cook the oatmeal first. I also don't put the apples and banana in the blender. I just mash the bananas and dice the apples.

Stay away from shrimp cs they're really high on cholesterol and easy on whole eggs.
by (53.1k points)
@crissie44313 shrimp and eggs are good cholesterol. They have no effect on your bad cholesterol. I eat 2 eggs every morning for breakfast. I eat shrimp at least once a week. My total cholesteral is 150. The egg myth came in the 60's and 70's when we first learned about cholesteral and its role in heart disease. But they didn't at that point understand the difference between good and bad cholesterol. So the belief was all cholesteral was bad. But it is not, some of it is healthy and good for you!
by (110 points)
@salespeople nope. cholesterol is cholesterol and if it lays on the inside of your arteries and collects, it can damage the arterial wall which breaks off pieces that can block blood flow, .

Weight watchers will help, you may also want to try red rice yeast. You can find them in the vitamin section at Walmart or the drug store. I recommend you start slow with them and build up to the full recommended dose. Just like cholesterol meds they can cause diarrhea in the beginning.

My doctor 2 years ago wanted to put me on diabetic medicine, cholesterol medicine, and triglyceride medicine. I said no, give me three months and I will be back. I join weight watchers, went back in 3 months and did not need any of the medications. Also my synthroid was reduced 25 mcgs, 3 months later synthroid was again reduced by 25 mcgs. Good luck on your journey it will work have patience
