I'm sitting down after a month with my bank statements and credit card statement.  Omg I'm scared. I've broken it down between 2 lists and now combing for grand totals. I'm scared. People have said debt happens when you have kids, they cost alot, you will never have money nor be debt free. I'm not listening to them. I'm going to control my spending. I'm going to get out of the red and into the black. We will have a family vacation! We can do this. Anyone have supportive words for me?

We’re in the same boat! We have two young kids and one more on the way. people always say “you’ll always have debt” I don’t believe it! It can be discouraging because it seems like it takes FOREVER. but just keep going at it!

@tragedian13792 my summer job (farmer) just sold the farm so now I'm trying to figure out something to replace it with. It's a 2500 loss of extra income for debt

@spermophyte awe man. Try to list the positives and rely on this group for side hustle suggestions in the search tab. But one thing remains! We will get through this and we will be hit our financial goals.

Kids aren’t that expensive if you’re careful. Just face it and make changes. I’ve recently done the same thing and just want to cry at all the wasted money. But it’s a lesson

1. Give your self grace. 2. Dont compare your journey to someone else's 3. Be thoughtful, present and aware with your money.

We have two kids and have been able to pay off all of our pre-kid debt (mainly student loans) since having kids and haven’t added any debt since having kids. We are single income as well. You got this!

Be kind to yourself. Be patient. Don’t give up- there will be weeks and even months where you might get frustrated. Just keep on!

Yes, after you look it all straight on, and you will feel like vomiting, you can tackle it head on. Baby steps help. I started in June and it has already drastically changed my life. I really think before I spend now. Good luck, you can do it!

@syllabize I put my credit card in the freezer so I'm not tempted to use it. Feels weird without it but good. Next to go is my debit card

You can do this ! I have 2 kids . Followed this budgeting system and I'm debt free except my mortgage. It's all about what you put into it, just stay focused and budget for things for the kids. We have fun money and I use that like if I see a toy they would want or to go buy a donut for them randomly. I roll over my fun money every week to build it up and then go somewhere more pricey as a family or even if I need diapers and forgot to budget for it . We also have 1 income. Just focus and say no to things if you have too . YOU CAN DO IT !

You can totally do this. What's the alternative? Also, one weird thing about money is that it responds to the attention you pay to it. So, if you start budgeting and allocating and responding when you make mistakes (because you will), in a few months, you'll actually be further ahead than you think you can accomplish. I don't know why that is, but we are seeing it in our budget. Now, sometimes surprises happen too, but that is life. Let us know where you are in 3 months and in 6 months. You'll be surpised.

@cambric178 love your explanation!

@singlefoot It feels sort of like magic, even though it isn't. My theory is there are so many companies/advertisers/restaurants with their hands in your wallet in ways you don't even notice, that when you start saying "no" it really makes a difference.
by (12.1k points)
@cambric178 yes! I've noticed how much more confidence i have and feeling in control and content saying no. I'm able to look at my savings and although it's small, I know it's going to grow and I'm adding to it. It's like suddenly giving yourself permission to save money and be in control of it!

I had the same feelings 2 months ago when I sat down with all my accounts. I had the biggest knot in my stomach because I was so afraid of the total. After budgeting now for just 2 months so much weight is off my shoulders and I trust the system, but i had to acknowledge that it only works if I do my part. I messed up earlier this month in my calculations because I didn’t trust myself and it was discouraging, but I didn’t let it stop me. I highly recommend printing Miko’s “why” page off her free resources library or make your own. It really helps to stay focused when feeling discouraged. You got this and you can do it! And my favorite saying: the only way out is through.
