I have been getting my nails done for forever and when I was looking at our budget I know we need to cut back on spending and one of those areas is going and getting my nails done. I’ve been looking at the dip nails as some of the starter kits are what I pay a month for a fill. Does anyone do them? Is there a brand that’s better than others?

I do my own dip, the brand I got was ASP from sally beauty supply.
by (3.4k points)
@fledgy yes. It came with two powders and the liquids you’d need. Just need to buy a file
by (3.4k points)
@inchworm I just use a file to take off the top shine, then put a pad with acetone on it, use clips to secure to my nails then put under a heating pad for 20ish min

Revel is a great starter! Most of my collection is from them. There’s a learning curve but it’s so much fun

@fledgy you can join Revel Nail Customer Community for lots of tips!

I just did the Kiara Sky for the first time the other night. It was my first time using dip powder at all, so I was pleased with my results. A week later and they're still going strong.

I started with the dipwell brand starter kit and liked it, got some revel products (didnt love their liquids) and moved to different liquids. overall i've saved money doing my own and can do them from the comfort of my own home
by (640 points)
@fledgy i really didn't mind it to start!
by (1.6k points)
@eyde60 have you stopped using theirs? I ordered it last night and when I looked them up they were ranked in the top 5 at-home dip kits. Even above kiara sky
by (640 points)
@slaty only because I needed a new set (I basically used them all up) and I couldn’t find a cost effective one without buy a new set of theirs

Ah, gotcha!

I use the Azure dip colors and the Model One or Kiara Sky system.
by (3.4k points)
@bud I love that color!
by (1.6k points)
@fledgy Yes! I like that azure powder has more colors, so I use it with that system.

I just bought mine at Walmart yesterday and did mine and my daughters nails! I'm very happy with my $30 purchase! All 3 of us going would have been over $130 at the salon!

I am in the same boat as you. I had been getting my nails done for years. Bought the Revel kit and honestly, didn't have the patience to use it. I tried but they looked like crap. Tried again. Crap. I've invested in some good OPI polish, OPI strengthner stuff and OPI top coat. My nails are RUINED from the years of acrylics, dips and gels. Sorry. Don't guess I answered your question. lol I do feel good every time I do my own nails though, verses paying $40 to get them done!
by (890 points)
@fledgy Same. I do have to say though, this OPI lasts pretty good. I can get through the week with just doing them once. The dip would be the way to go if you can learn to do it. I just don't have the patience. lol (Plus when I realized how horrible my real nails are, I was determined to just do straight polish for a while). Good luck! Join some of the nail pages. I watched a lot of youtube vidoes on Revel before I even tried to do them. They show you step by step what you need to do.

I want to do this. But how hard is it to get off at home?
by (10.1k points)
@leprosarium Same way they do at the nail salon; acetone.
by (3.4k points)
@leprosarium I put acetone on cotton pads, then use clips to secure to my fingers. Place under heating pad for 20ish min and it comes right off.
by (2.8k points)
They also use a drill tool at the salon too. That’s the only concern I have.
by (640 points)
@leprosarium i use the rice baggie method and it takes about 10 mins total
by (11.6k points)
I do a baggie and hot water (similar to rice), and it takes about 10 total. Less if I fine something bug enough to soak both hands and dont do glitter

For those of you that do it, how long does it take you? I use to paint my own nails with regular polish and it would take me 2 hours! I’m such a perfectionist! I now do dip at the salon and I’m out in an hour! I can’t imagine doing it myself it will take forever!
by (830 points)
@aeolus even with all the filing?!
by (830 points)
@aeolus wow! My main thing is the filing- I love square and it would take me forever to get them perfect and sometimes even mess it up! Filing and shaping itself takes me forever
by (830 points)
@aeolus lol. Dude I even come home from salon and fix nails myself im SO fucking obsessive ‍♀️

I liked the kiss dip powder better than colorclub but colorclub has more options in terms of colors. Both are under $20 at Walmart.

I just started dipping beginning of year. I love Revel. If you sign up for email you get a code for 10% off. The starter kits are $45 and you get 4 colors! I tried Peppi and did not like them. Once you spend the first amount and get the liquids it is cheap after that. The jars are about $9. But they will last you super long. So the first month may cost as much as going to a salon by after that it comes out to way less. Couple dollars a month!
by (2.1k points)
I can’t do press on of any brand as they pop off so easy with me just from deal with my two littles.
by (120 points)
@utilitarianism I couldn’t say better things about Revel! I’ve been dipping my own nails with their products for a few years now and I love it! (Just a disclaimer, I am terrible at painting my own nails, but this is very easy! ) They also have a rewards system where you get coupons after so much $$$ spent.
by (2.1k points)
@carminecarmita Baum after! Love their rewards system! And their products.

If I'm patient and do 1 hand at a time, I do an okay enough job myself. If i rush, it's absolutely not worth it. I would suggest buying a hand drill though. Using a buffer on my cuticles murders my fingers  I use revel and peppi powder and have kiara sky liquids.
by (11.6k points)
@fledgy I've seen people do it but not done it myself. I just tear up my cuticles and regret it like whoa  There's a peppi bst group with lots of recommendations though! People swear it's simple (but they also say dipping is simple and it's not )
