Ok working on my envelopes, do you have a grocery and eating out envelope or a combined general food envelope?

I may be the odd man out here. But we RARELY eat out. I don't have a separate restaurant envelope but if we do decide to eat out it comes out of our fun money.

I have one for groceries and one for restaurants. For me I will spend all of the money on eating out and then wonder how I'm going to pay for groceries if I were to combine them. I get paid weekly so I put $64 in groceries & $63 in restaurants envelope each week. This month, I've rolled over the grocery money each week. This Friday I will pull that money and put it into our EF/snowball envelope.

I have one envelope for all food (groceries and eating out) because if we buy more groceries than there’s less to eat out on, and if we eat out too much than there’s less money to buy groceries. It’s like a seesaw for me

I put eating out and fun money in the same category. Generally, anything I don't actually need comes out of there.

We separate but only because we do online ordering for our groceries so I don’t take any cash out for that but do take cash out for eating out

Are you likely to spend all of your grocery money on eating out? Then keep them separate. If you rarely eat out, combining might be ok. Mine's separate because I'm a scrooge and need "permission" to spend money sometimes. Money in the eating out envelope gives me that permission.

@differentiate1477 no we only eat out on Sunday after church normally!
by (2k points)
@wilscam Then I think it's safe to combine them if it makes it easier for you to keep track. :)

When my husband and I go out to eat, it's part of our Food envelope. When I go out to eat with friends, it's from the Eating Out envelope

I put "food" into one envelope. whether that be stopping by a coffee stand, going out to eat, or buying groceries. If I had a separate envelope for coffee and eating out, I would think "Oh, I can do it because I have money! " instead of thinking " I have to be careful not to buy coffee cause then I won't have money for groceries. " For me, it's a mental game.

I have separate envelopes. I actually hit the food budget in a few envelopes. -grocery stores (mostly Aldi, sometimes Hyvee, sometimes groceries at Target) - eating out (restaurants) - Sam’s (it has its own envelope. It’s somewhat toiletries, somewhat food and some ‘other)

Grocery is separate, eating out goes in the fun money. And since TBM changed my perspective I usually cannot manage to allow much eating out and end up saving the money. Food tastes better at home and I know who prepared it. I'm quickly becoming very slow to spend my money

I have a grocery/household one and a fun envelope.

Eating out is fun money if you have the means to. If you don't then as TBM said it should be part of your grocery budget (and in our case we stopped eating out all together then because we prioritized our kids eating healthy which is more costly where I live). Once we were able to afford "fun" stuff we got a fun budget. This was just a personal choice though.

I have always keep them separate and it’s worked well for us. We rarely eat out anymore but knowing it’s separate from budgeted home meals feels like an extra treat!
