I feel like I have too many categories. Would you combine anything listed below into one? Auto Food Debt Pets Insurance Savings Household Utilities Children Medical Misc Personal Thanks

That looks about right to me. What are you considering personal? Is that like fun money or misc money?

Can you include your insurance in other categories? Car insurance in auto, home insurance in household, etc.

And also wondering about personal vs misc categories

What's in household?
by (1.6k points)
@heterophony anything non food related for the house. Soap, detergent, toothpaste, sponges.

@doggy6257 oh ok. Makes sense! Thanks!

I combine my household things like that with grocery since I just grab what I need as I do my grocery shopping usually

@squirt my grocery store has ridiculous prices for things like that so I don’t buy them there. But if I did, I could see combining them into one.

@doggy6257 oh that makes sense! It seems like a lot of categories but they all make sense being their own thing

I combine my household with food because I get it all at one store. But i understand that some stores are more expensive with things like that so I understand now why you would separate them.

Personal, medical and misc maybe. Depending on what you intend personal to be. I combine house & hygiene together in my envelopes (paper towels, toilet paper, shampoo, deodorant). Looks like insurance and utilities could be combined also as those are just recurring bills, which don’t seem to need an envelope?

I think you have to ask yourself do you have enough money to fund all these? Or if an event happens. are you borrowing from one envelope and putting it towards another?

Why would debt be a category? I would just be paying when you have the extra money. Not saving it up each month.
by (1.6k points)
@decline si every time I pay my credit cards or medical bills I consider it debt and track it as such. I don’t consider my monthly payments as regular bills. Is that what others do?

I think it really depends on your description of each word and lifestyle. Example 1 - we pay all of our insurance with 1yearly payment so we roll it up into subscriptions. Example 2 - our boys are grown and gone, but now we have two doggies. So their food is with our food. Their medical, is with our medical

Looks good to me. I have 8 cash envelopes but sometimes only use 6 per month. I have 2 savings accts for sinking funds but use for about a dozen categories. I use Miko's subscription fund to track with different highliters. My point is, I dont think there us a certain amt. Its whatever you want to save for. Congrats and good luck on your journey. #debtfree
