So we’ve just started budgeting and being hyper aware of our finances. I’ve been thinking about how we can cut down on monthly expenses. We pay $40 extra to our apartment complex a month in order to rent a washer and dryer. When we move from here, we will have paid $1200 for renting a washer and dryer. We could buy a brand new washer and dryer for $1296. Opinions?  Just to put it out there, going to a laundromat or anything like that won’t work for us because we will be cloth diapering our son when he arrives in a couple weeks. Thanks!

I would think you could find a washer dryer for cheaper. Just not as nice but definitely cheaper than $1300.

I’ve really never thought twice about it.

@kronfeld that’s good news! I wonder if you can find a stackable one like I posted above for cheaper at a scratch and dent place or on Facebook marketplace

@cartesian maybe! I guess we’d just have to remove that board.

@kronfeld lol. It works so usually we don’t until there is a problem. You might have problems finding the size to fit. They look smaller than normal ones

@cartesian you’re right haha. Thanks for all of your input!

Yeah I'd buy if you could get used way cheaper or maybe a scratch and dent place

As a fellow apt renter I probably wouldn’t buy if you are planning to move soonish. Your next place may come with w/d or they may need to be side by side not stackable. We bought new machines a while back and then moved to a place we didn’t need them and had no where to store them and we had trouble selling like-new machines and took a huge loss on them. Once you are in a new place and know how long you will be there I would make a decision.

We made the same mistake- rented for 2 years ‍♀️ when we got a house we bought a used pair from a friend who had extras in her garage as backups- paid $100 for the set. if you’re renting they’re used anyway ‍♀️ a deal is a deal, within reason of course

Personally I’d buy used and then save for new. Or instead of renting use, I’d purchase and pay one off for same price.

So do you have the hookups? Or do you pay to use ones in the apartment building? You have limited options in a complex. Or asking to switch theirs for your own and not pay the extra, if that’s the case. what’s the cost after you leave? Not sure why’d want to switch stuff out in a complex if planning on leaving. or a complex in general

@nozicka Hurd yes we have the hook ups. We pay to rent the washer and dryer that they keep in our apartment.

Buy a used washer & dryer.

I would buy used if you can. This time of year everyone is buying their new sets they saved for and usually nothing wrong with old ones. Some women get new sets every year or so- take advantage of that

We bought our first washer and dryer used from a certified used appliance store. Actually, washer, dryer, and stove for $600 total. We soldnthem. last year still working, but we owned them for over 5 years.

So going into CC is NOT the best, but we financed our fridge at 0%apr for 18 months and paid it off fully within the timeframe. We did the same thing with a couch set. As long as I KNOW I can get it paid off with time to spare, I don’t mind doing that.

Also we have a Whirlpool washer and dryer, they were $428 each and work great!

We bought used for $260 and we'll sell them when we move next.

I was in the same boat (renting a washer and dryer at my apartment complex for $40 a month). I asked if they could remove their units and I could buy my own for cheaper but they said they couldn’t. 1). The warranty follows the unit. If they move the washer/dryer to a diff unit, it voids the warranty. 2). They didn’t have any storage space to take it out of my unit. So I was stuck paying the fee until I moved out.

I paid $500 for both washer and dryer. Bottom of the line from sears. They are almost 10 years old and still work great.
