Anyone else have a HUGE difference in refund amounts when using Credit Karma vs H&R Block? I'm seeing a $4000 difference!

I’d be cautious. Your refund is your refund & where you choose to file shouldn’t effect the amount you get back. There’s an error in one of the systems if you get back different amounts. I wouldn’t do my taxes through a lot of different sites to see which gave me the highest refund back- I’d want the correct one! I’ve been audited before & trust me- that’s not fun!

@erethism this. I did mine through two different ones but more so to verify I did it correctly. They were only different by $1.

@arabela- yes! I’d be worried & probably not file on my own if I got a large variation in numbers- clearly something is wrong if that happens!

@erethism exactly! That’s why I double checked. I more than doubled my income as a 1099 contractor last year so I was nervous and someone recommended checking it on two so I did that and was so happy they were similar. I work solely from home now so next year I’ll probably have to hire someone. Boo! Lol

This. I hire an actual tax professional now to do mine, I'm more worried about them being done right and not getting audited then getting 'more' back.

I used Credit Karma last year for the free filing and had always used H&R Block. Last year the difference was minimal. I just wanted to compare again and Credit Karma is $4000 more.

Something must be entered incorrect on one of them that is a huge difference.

Credit Karma has errors. I wouldn’t recommend it. If you want a free version, try FreeTaxUSA.

I always compare my numbers between turbo tax and H&R Block and they always match. I would try to find a breakdown and see where things are coming from And see where the discrepancy is.

I only use Turbo Tax and Tax Act and compare the two.

Yes! I’ve used H&R Block and a tax accountant and the tax accountant got me more money back $980 vs $1700

H & R is garbage. They always screw people over. I entered our info in TurboTax, tax act and credit karma. Got back same amount for all so I stuck with TaxAct like I did last year. I pay $50 for audit defense and $50 for the money to be deposited to our bank. That’s it.
by (1.6k points)
@tauro they charge you to direct deposit?!

@sideline64 our Bank does but I’m fine with it. It’s over $10k so they do. 2 years ago it was way less and we didn’t. Best online banking, perks and customer service we’ve ever had so I don’t mind one bit. We’ve had chase and Wells Fargo and even a bank inside Walmart and they were a nightmare with extra fees, overdraft crap(no overdraft on our cards can be done with bank now) and when someone stole our info and used it we found out it was an inside job from the physical bank twice in 2 years.

Freetaxusa. com is free for federal filing and 12. 99 for state, audit protection is $7. 99. I used a 10% off code and it was $17 and change after everything. If you want to have the fee taken from the refund amount then it's an additional $20 but I just waited until payday to get the $38 to file and save that $40 instead

Credit karma didn’t have was way less for us. They didn’t have me enter all the information on one of my forms and that changed the whole refund. We ended up using Tax Act.

@waylen we’ve used tax act the last 2 years. Love it!

Honestly all those DIY ones are unreliable. I'd rather pay an actual professional to make sure mine are right and I'm not likely to get audited

This is part of why we choose to pay H&R Block. I like what Dave says (I know not his page) about how we hire a professional to fix our car, exc. so why wouldn’t we to do our taxes? We have done free or cheaper ones before and respect everyone’s decision. But I do like the peace of mind of using H&R

Like some others have suggested, I would highly suggest FreeTaxUSA. Very easy to do, cheap to file, and they have a coupon available. I compared my refund on FreeTaxUSA to H&R Block and saw it was the same so I filed with FreeTaxUSA.

AARP offers free tax filing that is protected from auditing. We have used them the last 6 years and compare them to turbo tax and they always match.
