Okay in need of some advice. Husband is Active Duty. We are young, have two kids. Our next duty station is where my husband plans to get out of the army and it’s also our home state. However the area surrounding the base is not the safest. We are tired of the constant mold problems etc on post housing. Not to mention the army gives us housing allowance that we can use to pay for our house. On post housing takes all of the money and includes utilities (water, trash, lawn care) so each month that money comes and goes. At our new duty station the towns surrounding the post has homes for rent but we would have to pay upwards of 200 dollars just for rent not to mention utilities. Upon tons of research we would be better off buying a home because our mortgage could/would be lower than rent. The way my husband sees it is that we are putting that housing allowance toward a home that is ours rather than throwing it away. We have just paid off the majority of our debt, but I am fearful. I just want to save save save that money but I know once we move and if we buy we will have to pay utilities etc. I’m on the fence about buying but he is all for it. What would you do? Ps. I’ve crunched numbers and with the mortgage price we’re looking at plus an estimate of utilities and internet etc we would still live comfortably off of just income, plus he is due for a raise once we get there. I also plan to work.
Okay in need of some advice.

I would buy if you know you are going to be staying in the area. I’ve seen many of my battle buddies do it and we are cooking ourselves 10 years later for not doing the same.

@liederkranz I mean that’s def a possibility but if your not going to stay I’m not sure I would buy.

@liederkranz hmm. I don’t know that I would want 2 mortgages when you move. Because what happens if no one rents it?

I’d definitely consider buying if the plan is to stay in that area for at least 5 years. I wouldn’t do it if the plan is to move fairly soon and then you’re stuck with a house and a mortgage that either need to be sold or rented, and being a landlord is not a great fit for everyone.
