I've been a member here for a while now, but while I've commented here and there, this is my first official post. er, book! A bit about me. I'm 45 in a couple of weeks, married 21 years, and have 6 kids, ages 18-5. I was a stay at home mom for 17 years. A year ago I became a cashier at a local grocery store and LOVED it! Just scanning groceries and talking to big people! Anyhow, 2 weeks before school started this year, our principal through a preK/Kinder aide position in my lap. It paid $2 more per hour, and I was guaranteed consisted hours, which I didn't get as a cashier. I've been doing both jobs since September, although only at the store for 1 or 2- 4 hour shifts on weekends. Now, my question: Taxes are done, but I don't yet have a plan. Our refund is $7300 and $3000 is spoken for. I need help with the balance. We have $3386 in CC debt, a $1400 monthly mortgage payment, and a 14K 2nd mortgage ($190/month) that's a balloon due 9/2021. Oh, how I wish Miko had been around before we signed those papers! I just started saving for our $1K baby emergency fund in January, so that's still very small. Part of me wants to pay off all the CC debt. But, at the school, I'm an hourly employee, which means, unpaid vacations, holidays, and snow days. 2 weeks at Christmas was difficult, but we managed. We haven't gone further into debt. But another vacation week is in Feb, again in April, and then all of summer! I will have 4 weeks paid from the summer program I'll be working, but I'm wondering if paying all the debt is wise, or should I sock a bunch away for the upcoming months?

I’d start working on that balloon payment! That’s a good chunk of change due in a year and a half.

It is! Our plan is to up our credit score enough to refinance it at a much lower rate. With TBM, that actually seems possible.

I’d for sure pad the emergency fund first. Then work on paying down debt. During the school year can you pick up shifts at the grocery store to help with bills?

I work 1 or 2 four hour shifts/weekend. I can't work during the week. I'm out of school at 3:45, and the earliest I'm home is 4:30. I'd have to leave then to make it in for the last evening shift which starts at 5. I can't go straight there because I have to bring kids home. I do work after school care 1-3 days/week (3:45-5:15) and the occasional before school care (7:15-8:15) for extra pay also. My grocery pay goes directly to debt these days.

@gualtiero sorry meant during summer vacation?

I am planning on it. School will be running 4 1-week camps in July. It’s a little less pay than what I make now (possibly. May be more), but I’d have 40 hours/week which I would definitely not get at the store.

Save money equal to what you would earn during the vacation times and then “pay” yourself when those come so your monthly budget is the same as usual. Then figure out what you can throw to debt

Agree. You should make a summer sinking fund that supplements your income and doesn’t derail your other progress on debt and EF.

EF, enough $ to cover max out of pocket for any time not at school for entire school year, Ballon Payment!, debt. Absolutely need to get out from that Ballon Payment long before it bursts!

First off, the balance on your 2nd that is a balloon needs to be your focus. You need to pay ALL of your remaining tax refund to that and make most of your extra go there (unless you are planning to refi-rates are excellent right now! ) because that date is barely a year and a half away =1k+mo without interest to pay it off  2nd can you pick up extra hours at the grocery store when you know you wont be working (school breaks, etc)? It sounds like you have older kids that can watch the smaller ones for a few hours? Once your 2nd is paid you will have $ freed up for the credit cards and one less monkey in your back. Good luck
