I moved from Broomfield (a suburb of North Metro Denver) in August. Check out the surrounding suburbs -Thornton, Westminster, Aurora -if you are looking for cheaper housing. You can still be in downtown Denver in 20 min or so, of course commute time will take longer but there is always public transportation.

@pudendum4 I think we’ll be in the suburbs of Denver. I think my husband said there’s jobs in Commerce City and Golden

@alphabetic39 Commerce City is going to be cheaper than Golden. There are a lot of new communities in that area as well. The only draw back to the new communities is higher property taxes.

@ixia45 Thank you, I have to research the schools as well. My daughters school they attend now here in Arizona is a A graded school and would like something comparable in CO

@alphabetic39 I'm a real estate agent part time but I also work for the Adams 12 Five Star School District. We are a performance rated school district for the fourth consecutive year and our graduation rate is higher than the state average. We also have the greatest sustained academic growth compared to like districts in Colorado over the last five years. Commerce City is just east of our school district so it would be feasible to live in our district and work in Commerce City without a terrible commute. I encourage you to check us out and feel free to ask any questions I might be able to help you with. I love our school district and have worked here for 10 years.

We live south of Denver near Castle Rock. I am realtor out here so if you have any questions about housing prices in the different areas I can help you narrow down your search for your budget.

I'm currently in Arvada, a suburb, but spend a lot of time in Longmont (north of Denver) and am currently building a house in Frederick (also north). It's definitely more expensive here, but the weather and seasons are worth it. Rent/sales prices will go up the closer to spring/summer you get it, too.

@pang5 we are in Firestone and love it up here!

Marissa, that's awesome! I can't wait to move to the area! :)

@insure Thats where I was looking into! I read it’s very family oriented and great schools. And it’s not to far from Golden

@alphabetic39 great schools, very family friendly. Just expensive. We just moved from Chicago and was recommended this town.

@discrete1 if I was looking to move here (I moved here 7 years ago lol) the snow would entice me to move here! I love all the snowfalls this week, reminds me of home and of a true real winter! Haha

I live in Broomfield, CO (NW sub of Denver) and even in the suburbs the houses are getting ridiculous. We bought for 225K 5 years ago and the houses in the neighborhood next to us are selling for 400-600K. It takes me 25 minutes on a Sunday, 45-1hr on a weekday to get downtown for my job. I'm not sure about schools yet because my daughter is 2 and I haven't started researching.

That’s why I live in Laramie and am 2 hours from Denver. Even Fort Collins is crazy! I totally understand the anxiety!

I’m from CO and when we were looking to move from NJ last year to save money on cost of living/not sacrifice schools my parents told us to stay FAR away from CO.  My youngest brother is working full time and still living with them because the rental costs are just crazy. My parents have a paid for house in Aurora but don’t have kids in school. When we were thinking about moving back we looked in Centennial, Castle Pines, and Highlands Ranch. It was pretty comparable to the cost of houses in NJ but the taxes were cheaper.

Just south of Denver (Englewood). The housing market is beyond ridiculous here and to be very honest, I can’t in good conscience encourage anyone to move here unless you make AT THE VERY LEAST 6 figures.

My brother just bought a little south of Denver and honestly I can’t believe what they paid for their house almost 500k. The house/neighborhood was nothing special in my opinion either. On the flip side their taxes are like $600 a year so it kinda balances. Being able to drive to the mountains on the weekends is a nice perk, but not sure it would be enough to get me there.
by (4.2k points)
Omg $600 a year for property taxes?! ours are basically $700 a MONTH and that's "cheap" for where i am.
by (760 points)
@meitner yeah that’s partly why Denver is so inflated. the last time I was there it snowed a lot and they barley plowed the roads because the city services aren’t great b/c they don’t have any money. So it’s a give and take.

We live in Firestone which is north of Denver about 28 miles. I personally love our location because we are right in the middle of Denver and Fort Collins and about 25 miles east of boulder. I commute to Fort Collins most days it takes me 35 minutes. We have been in our house for 5 years, bought for $330, 000 and our neighborhood is going in the high $400’s. If you want to live east of the interstate and further from the mountains there are some good prices still!

I do, we live in Thornton. Houses start in $400, 000 we rent for $2000 a month. Most of the new builds are starting in the high $500, 000. We live about 20 mins north of Downtown Denver. We have lived all over the metro area but have been in Thornton 14 years.

I am a Colorado native. I've lived all along the front range. Now, we are in Longmont and it is the best! I never thought I would move north of Denver, but it is by far the best place we have lived. The housing market is starting to slow down(realtor here‍♀️). We are seeing a pretty steady change in the market all across Colorado. It isn't extreme, but steady. There are many affordable cities that aren't Denver.
