Hi everyone!  My name is Lauren, and I’m not just new to the group but I’m new to budgeting.Hi everyone! My name is Lauren, and I’m not just new to the group but I’m new to budgeting. My husband and I are expecting our beautiful twin girls in May. It has been a long road, but we are so excited! Expecting had made my husband and I realize that we aren’t the best at “Adulting”. We are really trying to get good habits in place before the girls come. We always seem to scrape by, but at the end of the day we don’t have a lot to show for things. My why is my family! My husband works so hard for us, and that allows me to stay home and get ready for our girls. I was a nanny for 10 years so staying home with my own children has been a dream of mine for forever. I really want to show my husband how much I appreciate him and his hard work by working hard to budget our money and make good decisions. I want to really manage our house and funds well. I could really use some help! Our main goal is to set up savings for emergencies and savings for the twins. We currently have 0 savings. Here is my issue. I never know when a check is coming in. He works in his family’s business, and sometimes he gets paid for a small project, and then other times we wait several weeks for him to be paid on a large project. He makes enough to support us, but we are often times feast or famine. How do I do the monthly calendar without knowing when to expect money coming in? Sometimes it’s once a month, and other times it a check every week, & the income is always different. I think the lack of consistent income has really been discouraging for trying to budget in the past. I really just gave up. I don’t want to give up and I want to really make this work. I could really use some advice!

I would budget on a monthly basis since that’s worst case senerio (as long as he is at least getting on check a month) and budget for basically the minimum you know for sure he is getting, that way anything else is like a happy surprise. I think savings are going to be really important at this point, basically your in stork mode. I have brother who makes good money but is in construction so he can go months with no job, he has had to learn to save enough out of his great paychecks to pay for months when no checks come. So my advice would be to budget for a minimum amount every month and stick to the budget monthly whether it’s a huge month or not. Whatever is extra slide to savings so you have a cushion for months when it’s tighter. First step is definitely to take a hard look at where your money is currently going and ask if it’s getting you closer to goal or farther away and make cuts where you can
