Hello everyone  im in process of painting my fence in silver copse. Can I get away with one coat or does it need another? Don’t want it to be much darker.  looks ok ❤️ needs another coat If anyone has any tips on doing the job quicker whilst also making sure no paint goes through to the other side would be much appreciated too!

Another coat and I've heard it's much easier and quicker with a sponge rather than a brush not tried it yet though .

I would suggest using two coats as minimum as i one used one coat once (i intended to do two but circumstances derailed that) and it just wears away after a while. You need two coats for the protection and to actually keep the paint on.

@reggie7979 thank you I didn’t know this!
by (1.2k points)
@nakisha273 you’re welcome. I tend to do 3 now minimum as it seems to weather better for longer.

@mechanism69 me too it’s taking a while. It says second coat should be applied within 2-3 days so I thought I’d better start it now if I’m doing one!

@outward1 Francis currently painting my fences and using a kitchen sponge which is working well so another thumbs up for that method
by (430 points)
@outward1 Francis I agree!
by (470 points)
@outward1 does it go through to the other side using this method?
by (3k points)
@trisaccharide no apparently
by (1.2k points)
@trisaccharide _ no it hasn’t gone through to the other side on mine and I’ve been able to put a nice thick coat on so it will only need one coat

Id always recommend doing 2 coats even when the tin may say 1. If you apply 2 coats your fence will have better coverage. So where the slats are slightly lighter compared to some of the others theyll then blend in better with the darker ones. 2 coats will last longer too. Plus paint will never go through to the other side so dont worry about that. Where it might be green on a fence always hard brush it down otherwise will show through or and reappear in a year. Good luck!

I'm doing 2 coats to cover ronseal medium oak. Tried using a sponge but the rough wood ripped it to shreds and left bits of sponge everywhere. I've been using a wilko red handled 50mm paintbrush - not designed for painting fence panels, but works really well.

Is the paint or treatment best to use anyone know?
by (2.7k points)
Natalie, this paint has ducks back water proofing in, ours has been done 3 years rain doesn’t really penetrate it, fence just naturally swells & expands with the heat of damp
by (780 points)
@headroom it's the cuprinol ducksback one I was looking at but B&q says there's a paint or a treatment version
