Dark Oak would ruin it. I'd put a stain or a oil. Keep it natural looking as possible.

I’ve see someone’s post where they laid bottle tops over the top, then a resin. I think I would like to do that, I’ve tonnes of bottle tops, just need the cable reel. How do I get hold of one?

Danish oil will help keep the wood and you can get it in a stain too if you want to colour it.
