And do i need a greenhouse. I was gonna just planr them in the ground
by (3.8k points)
@olszewski stick it in the ground, ideally semi shade. Likes morning sun, hates stong light. It will really take off, so be sure you want it. As it grows it likes being cut to keep sweetness. Not being cut will make it very sour, so even if you don't plan to use it, do keep cutting it
by (4.1k points)
@jackass10 i wanted to do a veg garden
by (3k points)
@olszewski no need for greenhouse unless you really want one!

by (1.1k points)
@olszewski have you tried googling? I've just read it's easier to grow from a crown but with a seed it says something about soaking it for 1 to 2 hours prior to planting ‍♀️

Ooh used to grow that years ago. You’ve given me an idea now lol. Love rhubarb. I never particularly did anything special, just left it to itself lol except obviously watering it in dry weather.

by (1k points)
No that's a Bamboo, the rhubarb didn't stand a chance,
by (4.1k points)
Wee raskels
by (1.2k points)
@olszewski it grows about 1. 5 - 2 ft tall. Just cut them off when they get about that tall or as wide as 2 of your fingers together. Dip it in sugar to eat raw or cook it to make crumbles etc. If you want to freeze it just chop it straight up and freeze it. I don’t do much to mine at all, it’s very easy to look after. If the plant gets too big, just chop it in half and give it away. Both my neighbors have some of mine. It is poisonous to rabbits etc though x
by (4.1k points)
@lapidate67 thank u. I just love rhubarb ♥️
by (1.2k points)
@olszewski me too, I freeze lots so we can have lots of crumble in the winter

by (2.5k points)
It's ever so easy to grow, just make sure you keep picking it or it bolts, when you pick it, don't cut it, pull it from the crown so that you see a little white 'heel' on the end, good luck

Some people put manure on it. I prefer custard on mine

by (5k points)
I once bought a packet of rhubarb seeds and grew them at the side of a concrete path. They were so strong they ate away some concrete. Usually I would buy a crown at the garden centre. It lasts for ever just keep pulling it.

@ledger there is probably an answer but my dad didn't and we used to have a regular crop every year. I heard you should cover it though I don't know why.

When's the right time to pick it? I've just moved and my new house has rhubarb already growing. I just don't know when I can actually start tucking in.
by (1.2k points)
You can pick it pretty much anytime tho i would only pick stalks that are at least 12 inches long.

by (1.3k points)
Every few years you can cut the root, proper name is crown. All you need is a clean sharp spade.
by (1.2k points)
I have grown Rhubarb for years in the ground with plenty of compost tho about every 4 -5 years it starts to grow a flower. I remove the flower instant i see it as it inhibits the growth of the fruit stalks. then november when it has died back i dig it up and divide it as you say. then you just replant them so you get more plants.

I've been growing rhubarb for a couple of years now. I tend to cover the rhubarb up in the late Autumn to protect from frost damage and to stop it rotting. Works a treat, plant pot is fine just remember to take it off in the Spring.
