Hi everyone ‍♀️ those of you that make your own compost, what sorts of things do you put in? Do you put peelings and t bags etc in too or just leaves and garden waste? How long generally does it take to be useable? Thank you

I use clipper tea, plastic free, so they go in, I put some paper in, grass cutting, as long as no weed and feed has been put on the lawn . All peeling (not potatoes) fruit cores, fruit peeling ends of melons (no seeds, and the bedding from the guinea pigs, i think that is about it.

There is a good list if you google it. You can compost a lot more than you would think.

You need to get your green and brown waste ratio right, 2 parts green to 1 part brown generally. you can use a compost starter to get things going. There's loads of info online :)

I empty the teabags into the compost as the bags won’t break down

@woodenware the teabags are sealed with plastic glue. One of my daily jobs is opening the bags and tipping the grounds into my peely bin.

@staff55661 me too - well as long as I have made the tea. The other half puts milk in before hot water which not only makes an insipid brew but makes the leaves go mouldy and not good for my compost. I have tried 31 years to teach him but to no avail lol

You can compost most things. Takes about a year to make good stuff do it in layers and water it's as well. This will make it get hot inside and will compost bettter

I heard you shouldn't put potato peelings in, they sprout and grow.

Don't put tea bags in your compost bin as they contain plastic

It's a bit like making a cake you just need to add the right ingredients. Personally I chuck all sorts in mine like coffee grinds, peelings, shredded bills and I even empty out the other half's ashtray in there

Grass clippings, cardboard (toilet roll tubes etc) paper, prunings (mowed over) all fruit and veg waste (raw) tea leaves (just rip the bag open) sawdust. all sorts really.

I’ve just emptied my 4 year old bin and it’s perfect! Don’t put weeds in it
