We have fake grass and a dog who obviously does his business on said grass. We jet wash the garden down once a week at least but the smell is still very strong. Any tips on what to use to help with the smell?

@schumacher12 Hepworth I'm sure it is a genuine question, I have fake grass and a dog and the grass does get a bad pet urine smell if you don't disinfect it on a regular basis.

Get rid of the Fake Grass, an lay down a real, healthy, non smelling, insect n wild animal friendly grass. Not sure if Artificial Grass n Plastic flowers should be discussed on a Gardening Forum  Maybe there is a Forum for Fake Grass n plants. Good Luck
by (610 points)
@liva2 I'm on a gardening forum and only own fake grass and fake plants as I'm on here for ideas to decorate and landscape a concrete yard that doesn't get enough sun to grow real plants. Bit rude to suggest we shouldn't be on a gardening forum? ‍♀️
by (2.7k points)
@dombrowski68559 hi. I didn't say that you shouldn't be on here, it was more of a question to be discussed. Even if you are surrounded by concrete, there are many options for you and others to make your back garden a pleasure for family and friends, plus nature to enjoy.
by (2.7k points)
Google plants that don't need alot of sun, am sure you will find plenty.
by (1.2k points)
@liva2 a garden is your outside space regardless of what type you have. Should there be a group for yards and patios too?
by (2.7k points)
@unbridle I can honestly say that I have enjoyed gardening since I was a young boy. I do not have any advice to give on Plastic/Synthetic Copies of the real thing. Gardening if you look in any dictionary, will give you a good definition of what it's all about. Gardens of all shapes and sizes, yards, patios, etc. If you are happy with the Plastic Stuff, then enjoy
by (1.2k points)
@liva2 dictionary? Bit rude! So can you give advice on here about slabs or a garden path? I'm confused because they are in the garden but not gardening?
by (2.7k points)
@unbridle hello again. Try an read through what I write on here thoroughly. You seem to be getting upset for no reason. You mentioned about there being a separate section for yards etc. To which I replied a garden can consist of any shape of size, an have shed, paths, patios, a slot more. Like I said before. If you are happy with plastic plants and grass, then so be it, just don't invite me round. lol

Please don’t use zoflora as it is actually toxic for dogs. We use a purpose designed disinfectant for our dogs. It’s gets rid of odours and stains as it breaks down and neutralises. It is both a cleaner and a disinfectent! I will see if I can get a picture for you!

I don’t like fake grass either but have no issue if any one else has it, as it’s their garden not mine! So don’t know why there is sarcastic remarks! - my mum has fake grass and dogs, she uses jeyes fluid to keep clean and get rid of the smell. She’s had the same bit down for about 3 years now (it was expensive) but looks brand new and never smells!  x

These plastic gardens are too much hard work and money to maintain. I'm a very busy person without a lot of time to spend so I've got real grass. It's so much easier to keep.
by (610 points)
@goof9 are you suggesting people with fake grass just have too much time on their hands and aren't Busy
by (1.1k points)
@goof9 are you kidding?  real grass was so hard for us to maintain so we went for fake grass. No mowing, no patches, nothing. Just pure green turf
by (1.1k points)
Sophie. there’s lots of disinfectant sprays you can mix to use. was it layed with the proper drainage. we had ours done reluctantly a few years ago as the grass was yellow in patches and we have a dog that likes to dig.

@cida0 actually dogs urine kills real grass, its the reason why we replaced our small lawn for artificial grass, because we'd rather replace the grass than the dog.

This was my worry about having artificial grass I’ve done research and a lot of people have suggested jeyes fluid, granite dust also helps but this has to be laid before the grass, sand was a no no if I had dogs x

Jeyes fluid and pet kennel disinfectant and deodoriser on amazon. We have a bigger dog and we never have that trouble now. it actually makes it cleaner then having actual grass as you cant disinfect that. Once a week in summer and once a month in winter. We use a feeder to put it in so easy and smells nice all the time.

Having fake plastic grass is not very environmentally friendly and supports no ecosystems, putting all these chemicals on it too is even worse!. not to mention costly. I personally hate how fake grass looks and feels, guess everyone is different but yeah from an environmental point of view a garden should be about life!

Get one of those garden sprayers that hooks onto your hose- if you spray lemon scented dish soap it cuts the smell and is supposed to help the grass. I've done it in my yard and have had success. You also need to spray places that they mark that are wood- decks, furniture, trees- as the wood will hold the smell. I've also sprayed those things with white vinegar in the sprayer, but you have to be careful around the grass as it can kill the grass. Lemon scented dish soap is my favorite and it smells nice! Then I try to direct my males in particular to one area as much as possible to try to minimize the damage.

@gil29325 I read somewhere that zoflora is really bad for your pets !
by (1.5k points)
@acorn If you use it to clean your floors and don’t allow it to dry beforehand, then I would say yes, it would be. I would think any disinfectant, not properly diluted and dried correctly would be harmful to any pet. Tbh.

Dog pee kills real grass, use a biodegradable disinfectant.
by (890 points)
@czechoslovak2 yep - this is why we are going artificial and also because the whole estate I live on has a massive problem with leather jackets, treating our garden is not enough when neighbours are infested to!

Don't use Zaflora is is not per safe. Use white vinegar and water. Dilute 50/50 and use a watering can. The vinegar is non toxic and a natural deodoriser and antibacterial. The smell of vinegar soon goes. Then always have a watering can with vinegar ready for dousing any toileting to keep smells under control.
by (610 points)
@shrovetide you can get pet friendly Zoflora x
by (520 points)

@gil29325 @kelter That's the problem. How many people know that a portion of cereals is about 4 tbs? No many as most people just pour. No one reads labels a d measures according to instructions, they guess. Herein lies a big problems for our pets who end up with associated medical conditions. Zoflora is never associated with the problems as it's marketed as 'pet safe' when it really isn't.

You can get something to add into their water to make it less acidic, which might also lower the amoania smell , also if said dog is more hydrated it will weaken the strength of their pee. If not possibly walk out at certain times and train to pee only one end and watering can after it.

Guide dog puppies are trained to pee or busy in one area only. Anyone can train there dog to do it. Fence off a small area let the dog into it and when it does what is needed give it a treat and tell it well done good dog etc. It does involve always putting the dog into the area. But once they have been busy they can go off into the other parts of the garden.

Am wondering  What with all these extra cleaning fluids soaking into the ground. How long will it be before we have problems with our streams, rivers etc being polluted.  We all know that the Careless dumping of plastic etc in our seas has resulted in, the fish that we eat, will contain particles of someone's flip flop thrown away years ago. Yuk. Don't eat much fish these days Maybe the cleaning fluid will dissolve all the Fat that accumulates in the drains.
