I’ve got 2 dogs, a Doberman and a Border Collie and they wrecked my real grass, it ended up patchy and very muddy when it rained. We now have artificial grass for a number of reasons but the main one being my dogs can go out and not get filthy paws. I don’t find it hard to clean , we either give it a good soaking with a lawn sprinkler in the summer and I use a watering can in the winter to wash away any mess.

Fake grass you just wash with a hose how ever if your dog consumes it it could mess your dog's girl tract up

Definitely. Do it. Cats and dogs. No going back. Great all year. Less muddy paws in house. They love it.

Definitely recommend, no more muddy paws!  But just a thing to consider, I play flyball with my dog and he regularly rips his dew claws out on it. I try to keep him calm, but difficult when he’s obsessed with his ball

We have both. But artificial is good with dogs especially in the winter. The dogs dont get muddy. It's much easier to clean. Definitely recommend xx

I have fake grass and as soon as it was laid my dog used it. Every whip and flip I put disinfectant in the watering can and sprees it around. Lovely in the winter as my garden use to be a mud bath but now it looks lovely all year round. You won't regret it.

Don’t do it! It’s bad for the environment, it’s made from tyre rubber that has been known to be carcinogenic! It’s unhygienic, not healthy etc .

Our astro turf has been down for over 6 years, and after Harvey Philips and my self! *inc toilet needs* The turf has now worn and the final straw was the fire pit, we are changing it any way. So here is to another 6+ years of new astro turf when it gets put down in good weather.

My neighbour has it front and back. Her dog uses the back to toilet inbetween walks and is fine. However she cleans everything up within minutes

Fake grass cannot grow Dandelions which is the first and only food I believe Bees can find at this time of year. The environments health versus a few lots of mud/dirt. Our world is not meant to be a sterile one. So a no if you had not guessed.
by (1.9k points)
@decorum14 bless your heart. Actually I have seen fake grass on a front near me. Bit it looks like a rumpled up carpet.  hope your doggie can be relieved then. X
by (840 points)
@decorum14 from an environmental standpoint I believe paving stones would be better than artificial grass if you can source recycled slabs and set them in sand rather than mortar. This way the water can drain naturally into the ground and you are not creating new demand for materials that have a harmful impact in creation.
by (2.2k points)
@tavey flower beds and pots can grow dandelions - wildflowers and many other ways of sustaining wildlife - a lot of people post on here who are in new builds and areas where grass doesn’t grow - quality well laid AG lasts a long time and underneath are a variety of insects. Have you ever campaigned to the government as to why they are allowing houses to be built that are not sustainable green spaces - or do you just go after the unfortunate home buyers?
by (1.9k points)
@fanfare well I must say the lady who I first text to was more accommodating then I was more so too. New builds are actually cheating you and the prices are wrong too. Another argument though but I am not against you - for you. I do sign campaigns and there is a building co., who incorporate nesting areas for Swifts etc in their eaves. Wildlife meadows. Trees already on site are kept. Ponds are created. That I do love. It can be achieved.

Why would anyone want to cover their garden in plastic ? Terrible for the enviroment. Even paving would be better.

I have it out on the slab area. Great for kids and dogs. No mud in the winter. Nice sun bathing spot summer. Easy to hose down. Also got an acre garden & woods. So not spoiling wild things. Stops tiny weeds that I use to spent hours removing

I personally don't like fake grass. grass should be grass nothing beats a decent lawn. Each to there own I suppose, I'm a gardener so would obviously favour the more natural of the two.
by (820 points)
I agree but I can’t keep my lawn decent atm! It’s just a mud pit
by (1.1k points)
@resonator sharp sand massively helps with drainage (to a degree) and is fairly cheap. What does the lawn space look like have you got a picture? might be able to help with some ideas.
by (820 points)
@barre thanks really appreciate that. I think again our issue is dogs! We have separate areas for dogs and kids now as I don’t like the thought of kids playing on a glorified dogs toilet! But that dogs toilet was meant to be the pretty adult space lol  will try and find a picture
by (820 points)
The grass is really patchy when the ground is dry and currently it’s very boggy and just covered in worm mounds!

@unbearable I think it’s a bit silly putting it on top of grass. It’s not the general thing it’s usually put on a hard surface. I think we’re all thinking it’s cleaner at rainy times. I got mine because I wanted the patio to be a safe area for my grand children to use their slide. fake grass drys so quick. The bonus is time dogs come up from garden & woods their feet are clean

I think you buy a type that's for pets

by (2k points)
If you wash it immediately after the dog has used it, it's fine. if you wait a few days then the smell lingers & is not pleasant. It all depends on how much you like to follow your dog cleaning up pee

After the last few hot summers I'm pleased that I got fake grass. No patches, no cutting, no weeds and easy to clean. My dogs actually prefer it x

by (1.6k points)
My dog loves to sniff around in our grass and have a nibble now and again so I think she'd miss ours. All I would say if you really do want it is to check suitability for pets because some types can get as hot as concrete pavement in the summer.
