Please can someone help?  My garden is clay based.Please can someone help? My garden is clay based. So In the winter it’s like a bog and In the summer it comes up with huge cracks!  we have tried adding top soil and sand, more grass seed etc to break down the clay but it doesn’t work. I just want a nice lawn

We have this just put a french drain in & top soil & grass seed, will let u know in a few weeks

Dig it all out, good bit of hardcore and then top soil then new turf.

Aerator you need . It can’t breathe and needs water

I have 10 -20cm of top soil on top of mine which seems to do the trick but my gravel always ends up with cracks

Key to a good lawn in the summer when it’s hot, regular cuts, feed the lawn as instructed on the lawn feed & keep watering in the evening to keep the ground from drying up & cracking like in this photo. Grass like any other plant need regular water & clay soils need to be kept moist to stop drying & cracking. Use a sprinkler & keep rotating round the lawn area during hot dry spells. But only in the evening once the sun is off it or you will scorch the grass.

Agricultural gypsum comes in 25kg bags it’s a white chalk that breaks down clay soil. You can either mix it in or sprinkle on top.

I had the same problem. Soaked it and aerated it. Rake. Top soil. And seed.

Buy one of these. Drill holes as deep as you can and fill will gravel/ stones and just cover with grass. It should help the surface water drain past the clay layer. I have a clay problem in my garden too.
