If your old enough to remember 1976 you would not ask this question

@soapbox47 year I left school, the perfect summer
by (1.1k points)
@cloistered indeed, every drop was saved and put on the garden, bath water the lot
by (3k points)
@soapbox47 I wasn’t really aware to be honest, as a 16 year old I just remember the summer of a lifetime and the odd water pipe popping up in some streets
by (1.1k points)
@cloistered stand pipes ever where, same year we had a white Christmas
by (3k points)
@soapbox47 yes you’re right it was. It’s crazy when you think about it, we had a really bad winter a couple of years ago with snow for weeks then within a couple of months we were comparing the summer to that of 76 ‍♀️

It takes filling the 10L watering can 11 times to get around my garden. Fortunately, we clean the temporary koi pond water into the IBC tanks for the filtration on the new pond we are building so currently dipping the watering can in that

No never. I like plenty of bubbles in my bath. To be honest I don’t know how people use so much water. We have bath / shower every day, at least 3 loads of washing every other day, dishwasher on every night, grandkids pool filled up, jet washing patio etc, watering garden once water butts are empty and that costs me £11 a month.
by (570 points)
@cloistered I paid £20 a month for 2 year and it’s now gone up to £60 as apparently they don’t read the meters that often and just estimate
by (880 points)
@cloistered are youvon a meter ?
by (3k points)
@adipose26504 yes I am
by (1.1k points)
@cloistered . seriously? We are on a meter too and it's much more than that.

We have to run the hot tap for a while till the water comes out warm, I put it in a bucket and save it for my plants. We are on a water meter too, as I only have a small balcony, there is enough water to water my plants, I haven't had to put the tap on just to water the plants.

Our shower is run from the central heating boiler and it takes about a 20 litre run off before it gets hot so we always catch that in a flexi bucket to water the garden

Does water cost anything lol
by (1.4k points)
Crikey. Yes! Usually about £20 a month, depending on how many in the household & whether on a meter or not
by (1.8k points)
I have five rainwater butts and one of them catches water from the bath/shower/washbasin. This means I very rarely use tap water to water the plants. It keeps the water rates down to £13 p. m. Instead of almost £70. If I had room I'd get a tank to catch even more rainwater
by (840 points)
Of course it does, about £300 a year for 2 of us on a meter. 10 years ago we were paying £800 a year before the meter was fitted.
by (540 points)
@cruck Thornthwaite Yes of course it does

We live in the country. Here you are allowed to have 'brown water' which means that the kitchen sink, bathroom sink and the washing machine all drain out into the yard. I have built a garden over the washing machine drainage area where I now have a large mint garden.
by (5.4k points)
@sudatory50 what about winter, i take it you close it off, does water drain into a field, or is it run in wee streams, to distribute, oic would help, its doing my nut in, im gonny come see when this is over, im fascunated by this
by (5.4k points)
@sudatory50  maybe not, im in SCOTLAND, maybe on hols some day.
by (800 points)
@heterogamy67 LOL - You would be welcome, my 85 yr old mom likes a man in a kilt! Actually we are on top of a hill (what goes for a mountain in the local area) so it never makes it to the stream, and actually it rarely makes it outside the bounds of the garden.
by (5.4k points)
@sudatory50 . partial to the kilt, good wishes to mum. im 67, still wear it for special ocasions, Hamilton tartan, full dress regalia.

Ewwwwwww no fish tank water yes they love the nitrates. But you can get bad illnesses from human's. Like mad cow. Cow's can't eat cow's they go mad.
by (840 points)
Cows got BSE from being fed the remains of sheep with scrapie. You wouldn't get it from watering your garden with your own bath water.

by (610 points)
@dejected5 do you stand IN the bucket?
by (790 points)
@guanaco1741 no  I first started doing it when we had a very hot summer and I was surprised at how much water is collected and how clear it was even after I’d washed my hair etc. I did a bit of research and it’s absolutely fine to use on your garden as long as you use it the same day and don’t let it stand something to do with the detergent in it
