As long as you put them somewhere that won't cause problems for other people! And where birds can't crash into them! They can look lovely

Have these two old house mirror up painted in outdoor paint now, don't have trouble with bird (maybe due to height) and cats love looking in them caught quite a few upto now

Left one leaning against a wall for a few hours and our resident blackbird got very aggressive with its reflection almost to the point where I thought it was trying to kill itself so I took it away

I can only give my view, i had friend whos kitchen burned down because of a vase on a table reflecting light. just because of this, im always cautious placement of glass or mirrors in window cills or anywhere that can receive direct sunlinght. Call it unlucky, chance in a million, whatever, maybe just me.

Curious I've been told mirrors in the garden can potentially cause a fire  when in direct sunlight? X
by (530 points)
My daughter left a magnifying make up mirror on her windowsill. Luckily, I went upstairs for something before I went out. The then wooden window frame was smouldering.
by (930 points)
@nadene wowzers you've been so lucky. It's 1 of the reasons I've never put 1 in my garden not sure I'd want to run the risk.
by (530 points)
I think they look nice in a garden. They add intrigue. I’d probs have the fence on fire
by (6.5k points)
@myrtice41 you are right but you could place one in a shaded area.
by (930 points)
@nadene  that's my thoughts. They look fab dont get me wrong but no sure I fancy the risk
by (930 points)
@beckwith would it have to be full shade? My garden get full sun on the backs all day n sun till lunch time on the fronts?
by (6.5k points)
@myrtice41 I would temporarily put it In The most shaded spot, then Watch how the sun reflects in it. Just be careful. You could also google it.
by (930 points)
@beckwith ok thank you

I had one until all I could hear was this tapping sound it was constant. then I came across a little bird exhausted from attacking it, i realised it thought it was another bird in there so was trying to fight it off. I removed it straight away poor little thing was so tierd
by (790 points)
@tartarean502 had the same experience - see my post above. It was scarey how aggressive it got
by (750 points)
@engedus5 I definitely wouldn't put one back into our garden. I have so many lovely birds visiting us and definitely don't want them to come to any harm.

I heard and have personally believed that if you hang a mirror on the outside wall of your house it provides a gateway to unwanted spirits getting in your house so to avoid putting one on the house wall itself.

I have one behind my plants so they reflect in it. It has been in my garden for years.

by (1.5k points)
They need to be ones for the garden and not just upcycled house ones. The reflection from the sun could start a fire

I have three and it depends where you place them. I’ve never had a problem with birds flying into them or fires. Just use common sense when placing them

Just be careful about where you place them and where the sun is. I had a mirrored chime and a wooden wheelbarrow and the reflection from the sun made it catch fire! ‍♀️

Cute idea. I live in kansas and we get a lot of hail so I would be worried it would break.

Dangerous if the sun hits them, I had the sun hit a mirror on my bathroom window ledge the window frame almost set fire! If I wasn’t home and happened to have gone to the bathroom and found it burnt and smoking I dread to think what would have happened, minutes later there would have been flames
by (4.1k points)
@task201 Haynes How frightening! I am glad everything worked out. I always wondered about the dangerous aspects of mirrors starting a fire or being broken.
by (730 points)
@portsalut my old boss’ whole house caught fire, mirror and sunlight again, I keep seeing all these mirrors in gardens it terrifies me, it’s not just your home you’re risking it’s your neighbours too, kids etc it’s dangerous, as lovely as look it’s not a good idea

They can be distressing for birds they sometimes spend hours defending their territory because of their reflection, which is wasted energy for a bird.
+29 votes
by (730 points)
No. The one down the road confuses the little birds which constantly fly at them and hit themselves. Cruel addition to a garden I'm afraid
+2 votes
by (1.8k points)
Not good when the sun reflects on them, unless you want burnt grass or worse, a shed or something burning down, sun reflection is dangerous, mirrors in the garden are a disaster.

by (990 points)
I’ve had mine for over a year no birds have ever flown into them and it’s a court yard garden so where they are doesn’t really get the full sun

My house burnt down causing 330k worth of damage previously & making 6 families homeless. No way am I encouraging fire into my home again. Accident waiting to happen. My local fire service asked people to remove them as 4 fires last month due to mirrors reflecting.
by (730 points)
@willie8 I’m sorry this happened to you, they’re awful they should not be sold as garden mirrors, I wish more people realised
