I am planning on buying some bay trees this year. Are they best in pots or in the ground? I’d ideally prefer to them in the ground due to where I would like them placed but if they prefer pots then I’ll figure it out!

Definately in the ground. They grow much better than in a pot (I have both) and the birds love them.

I bought a small one the size of an indoor pot plant and planted it in the ground about 5 years ago. It is definitely now a tree! It got to about 12 foot tall last year to I've heavily pruned and shaped it and I'm beginning to bring up the branches underneath. Unfortunately it has loads of main stems rather than one, so it's not a lollipop

In the ground. Will get root bound in a pot.

In pots . the are fast growing so you must keep on top of the clipping or the easily get out of hand if you put them in the. Ground
