Has anybody had their back garden completly covered in stones? Got a quite and this seems the cheapest option. I want to still use a pool and was thinking of getting some rubber squares for underneath the pool. Has anybody done this before I make a huge mistake. Thanks in advance.

Me. I took it all up. They’re definitely not dog or kid friendly. The previous owners didn’t have dogs or kids, so it looked lovely. We slabbed the lot and put slate in flower beds down the sides and they still looked awful (dogs toilet) so we’re in the middle of decking right over the lot.

@thomajan Oh really. I've got I dog do is a concern of mine xx

@chancemedley117 honestly I’d rather put up with the mess till you can afford to do what you really wanna do with the area, gravel/slate is pointless with a dog imo. I’ve put 2 lots down now and just paid £120 for a skip to put it all in. I have it in my front garden which is ok, was cheap and cheerful to make it look pretty but I don’t let the dogs out the front (they like to jump fences) so that’s not so bad.

@thomajan thank you for the advise. My mom has just had it done with her two dogs so will be interesting to see how she goes with it before I consider it futher x

@xavierxaviera6778 lovely garden. Which stone size did you see and are they ok to walk on? And what's the size of your blue shed thing? looks lovely
by (2.8k points)
@alpert5 we've got a strong plastic gridding under most of it, which keeps it from spreading everywhere which is on top of membrane. Its pea shingle we used. The back corner is just on membrane but I find its fine to walk on and I have balance problems. The gridding came from screwfix also the membrane did. We put it down as the garden was so muddy after all that rain last year, its really worked. The baby summerhouse is 1. 8m x 1. 8m and 2. 7m high

@xavierxaviera6778 I have balance problem too. Glad it's worked well. Where did you get the summer house and did you have to put it together

Depends what your talking really, stones, gravel, river pebbles. I had 14 tonne of river pebbles. When I had my little boy I took a large section and paved it as not ideal for kids to play on.

@manor my son is 13 so he doesn't really play out in it as such. More to relax in and the pool. Grass just doesn't go in my garden xx
by (400 points)
@chancemedley117 I added paving so he could use ride ons and scooters etc. was fine till he came along lol. you may want to add a solid/deck pathway or something if you are noise sensitive lol
by (310 points)
@manor thank you. Quote for the stones is 400 and slabbing and stone 1, 500 so a big difference x
by (400 points)
@chancemedley117 you can see the pebbles on the left, they were all over the bottom area

If you have a dog don't get stones near the house. As they kick them and cam break glass. I learnt the hard way lol
by (310 points)
@centurial2944 I've got a shih Tzu and has crossed my mind. We have some slabs already by the windows so hoping it will be ok xx

@chancemedley117 I've got a patio area and then it was stone from there. But I have a bull mastiff and a staffie. This year I've at to move stones back even further and lay artificial grass. I don't have the issue now
by (310 points)
@centurial2944 ah ok. I will deffo keep that in mind thank you xx

Don’t mind stones. better than bark x but I have to pick out all the dead leaves and bits that end up on it as looks messy otherwise  stones r not suitable for ocd!
by (310 points)
@cero2 Haha thankfully I don't have OCD I just don't have the ability to maintain a nice garden. My dad is a gardener and he has given up all hope with me haha xx
by (390 points)
@chancemedley117 I wish you nothing but luck then babe  get some fake plants in pots outside easy
by (310 points)
@cero2 honestly about 2/3 years a go I paid somebody to dig it all up had my dad lay turf. It was my pride and joy. now. well let's not mention the patchy weed filled garden  x

@chancemedley117 Was due to move just before lockdown but has been postponed until we are free again. the Garden we are going to is huge and has pond and veg patch and other secret bits. don’t quite know how am gonna manage that  Also when have my mums dog he likes to go mad and the stones end up everywhere xx Slabs like you say are more expensive but easier to clean than little stones xx

I have all stones down and regret it, I have a dog so  to clean stuck in gravel! They have discoloured after 2 years and hard to clean. I wish I’d spent the extra and had it paved.
by (310 points)
@earflap this is what I am worried about. I have a dog. The garden at the moment is horrible. About 2/3 years ago I paid to have it all dug up and turf laid. Now it's patchy and lots of weeds. The quote for all in with the work and stones laid is about 400 and part slabs and stones is 1, 500 xx
by (2k points)
@chancemedley117 I 100% would not do it again. It’s ok from a distance lol but too much work to try and keep clean. Either have an area done at a time when you have been able to save and get it done.
