Just a question, my garden backs onto another garden, at the back their garden they have a tree, (been told its IVY) when I moved in we cut it all back as it had gone through the shed that was here, I have cut it back so. many times, but it is growing at a rapid rate, coming through our fence and over the top, and is now starting to affect my shed (can't get behind it to cut it again) another neighbour has spoke to them with no luck, is there anything I can do or say? Or do I just need to try and keep control of it once it enters my space? Thanks

I don't know why people are selfish enough to grow these kinds of things when everyone knows they invade others properties. If they can't keep on top of them before they go into someone else's garden they shouldn't have them x

The only thing you can do is to cut it back and offer the clippings back to the owner , if you dont then this is theft . If it is a hedge over 6 ft you can complain to the council but this will cost you around £400 . If the it's just one or two bushes then it's not classed as a hedge and there is not a thing you can do even if its blocking your view . etc . If you kill the ivy then they can prosecute. The best way to deal with it is to be nice to the neighbours who might kill it for you

All you can do is control it. I have a neighbour who used to cut my climber back (we have back to back gardens) & he used to pull it over to trim it (which IS illegal). In the end I cut climber down & replaced it with Laurels which he can't cut back, as it on my boarder not his

@concourse I do that to my neighbours privet hedge if he doesn't like it he can complain but it's 20ft high on my side and he doesn't look after it. People should take responsibility for what they grow

@hedveh I agree, mine was controlled by me, he just didn't like it over hanging on his side, so he used to pull it over & cut 2ft off of it. leaving it very short on my side again. Hence why I decided to replace it after 5 yrs of him doing what he did. Looks better now with laurels anyway

@concourse I hate privet. My other neighbour has it adjoining my front garden but she not only keeps it trimmed but comes and does my side too.

Glad you have a neighbour like that, that's how it should be

@hedveh my old neighbour did that, it was upto my bedroom window and she'd never cut it. We asked if we could take it out and put a fence up but she said no so we applied to the council to put one in front of it and they said yes. Every time it grow over the top of the fence and high my ex would could it back and lower as it stop light in our garden and she'd come out going mad about it. Years later we wanted a conservatory and we needed the 2 foot back that we'd lost so I asked again if I could take it out, she snapped just do what you want I'm sick of arguing with every neighbour over it x

As you can see all that is over my fence

@yeanling47 You have a right to cut it back to the fence line, but not the height. Maybe get the council involved to rectify the problem, think it needs a middle man to intervene

Just speak to them and say u are looking to cutting it and do they mind. Then cut inwards and height, its on ur side so hes not gonna see it is he.
