Question

Hi all, I'm planning sectioning off a play area for my kids with a climbing frame and not sure of the best surface for underneath. My first thought was sand (but worried about cats) or bark (but don't want them getting splinters). I was then looking into rubber mulch but it's sooo expensive and it'll be a large area (7m x 6m). Has anyone here made their own rubber mulch with old tires and a chipper? Would you recommend it? What surface would you recommend? Thanks in advance

Yes unfortunately cats will be your biggest issue with any organic options. What’s under there currently? A decent hard wearing lawn with added micro clover can be effective

@nonie, it's grass at the he moment but that will be dug up when we level it off

@antedate120 in a previous house we had a concrete area we wanted to turn to a play area, we invested in heavy duty rubber matting and was brilliant.

We have just had their stuff on the grass or decking and reseeded or moved things round the garden if necessary.
