Bought an apple & pear tree in poundland yesterday. At just £5. 99 each it's cheap enough if I do lose them . Plenty fresh young buds already showing. Any tips on planting fruit trees? I live in Highlands, Scotland so unsure whether to put them in pot under pergola until weathed improves. Any tips pls?

I dont know if this is true, but when I looked into putting an apple tree in the garden someone told me I needed 2 to pollinate each other to produce fruit.

If they are not self pollinating, they will not fruit.

Check if they're self fertile. If not you need more, unless there are other frees in the area.

We've had some young apple trees planted in the local area, they are pretty well exposed, maybe don't plant till the weather is less stormy. As long as there is another apple tree in the area they will be pollinated and it doesn't have to be the same variety of apple tree for this.

You'll need another apple tree or one near to you or you'll never get any apples and depending on which pear you have you might need another of those too

I put my fruit trees in 90Lt pots, they will stay a manageable height. A lot of TLC, they are doing well. Comments are right, will need 2 if no other trees around. Good luck and enjoy x

I want to grow fruit trees in a pot too as our toddler loves fruits we have space in the garden but I don't want them to get too big our neighbours have apple tree so that wouldn't be a problem with pollinating might get one thx.

If planted in the ground do they have to be away from the house ? do the roots get big etc ?

@dixiedixieland245 thats what Im wondering as I fancy training the branches onto a frame on wall. Ive seen it done in garden centres, sold grafted on triangle cane frames. I will get googling tonight x

@dixiedixieland245 I have 22 fruit trees as they age the roots do grow. I would not put fruit trees to close to the house or underground plumbing. They can disturb concrete.

I bought my sister a peach tree when she lived in a trailer in a town near by. We kept it in a pot for two years it got small fruit. The next year she moved into our guest house. So we put it in the ground behind her house. That thing produces more peaches than all of mine. 3 years in the ground now. She is so happy she s 87.
