Can anyone help?  I have a patch out the front of my new house. Can anyone help? I have a patch out the front of my new house. It's a sun trap so I'd like my children to be able to play there when we lose the sun out the back. So I dug it all out and seeded with grass seed which is growing beautifully. I live in a very small cul de sac. One of the neighbours dogs has decided to use my garden as a dog toilet! I'm fuming (dogs shouldn't be off the lead there but that's another issue) But what can I do to keep the dog off without blocking the area off? Does anyone have a tried and tested method? I have already researched and googled but would like to know what people have actually successfully used if possible? Many thanks Edit: I don't know who's dog it is for certain so can't speak to the neighbour.

Confront the dogs owner. Or throw it on their garden.

The best thing is to secure your boundary, so either a small fence, hedge or you could use pots. You can report it to your local council, though they might not be able to do much at the minute until things go back to normal. I would have a word with the neighbour though.
by (640 points)
@lintel95 sadly I can't block it off as I share it with my next door neighbour and it's not quite big enough either. I think a fence would look a bit silly.
by (5.4k points)
@kazimir at least it would keep them out of your garden. You can buy powders etc that you put down, however they don’t always work, and once it rains, you will be replacing it. Have you any pictures?
by (1.8k points)
You could always mention to neighbours that you have this problem maybe asking if they have noticed it also, if it's their dog they might take the hint or if not they may know who dog belongs to, other than that spray with citronella might put them off

I don't know who's dog it is for definite so I can't ask any of the neighbours yet. However there shouldn't be any dogs off the lead out there anyway so I'm assuming I will be dealing with an irresponsible dog owner . But reserving judgement til I know for sure.
by (5.4k points)
@kazimir unfortunately it happens, some just open the door and let their dog out to wander. On the other hand, some do just escape. If it’s an on going issue, I would still report it as they can be fined for straying as well as the dog fouling.

@lintel95 yes, it is daily. But I'm hoping for a quick resolution with the neighbour and hopefully be able to buy some sort of deterrent to stop the dog coming back. I have a dog myself but she's doing nothing to help! Lol.

@tripletail78 I have done this before . And it worked .

Put a camera up thn you can confront owner x
by (640 points)
@hinayana478 Findlay I've just done that tonight. Not sure it will stop the dog if it's allowed out without a lead though. But will allow me to see who it is. I was hoping I could buy some kind of deterrent?
by (4.9k points)
@hinayana478 Findlay Also get a camera on your house x

Moth balls

@pylon do you know if this works to stop cats?
by (1.4k points)
@pylon I feel like I've tried absolutely everything to stop cats and nothing seems to work. It's worth a try I think. Thanks
by (220 points)
@pylon don't think this will work. My dog chews moth balls and all 4 of my cats will chase and play with them. In fact all of my pets seem drawn to them, not deterred
by (1.4k points)
@hydrastinine56735 oh darn it! Tearing my hair out with it. I have a dog but the cat is sneaky. Ah well back to the drawing board then . Thanks for info

The dog pooe belongs to the owner, perhaps return it with a note, and explain you are running out of bags to put it in, what with the lockdown and everything :)
by (640 points)
@pedro9 I did actually run out of bags today! My husband had to buy 'posh' ones as that's all he could get!

Put a hose by the door and spray it each time you see it. Not a hard spray but enough to make it move on. As you do this either clap your hands or make a loud hissing sound. The idea is that the hissing sound will replace the hose and it will run off. It don’t hurt the dog or cat for that matter but wil train it to go elsewhere. Remember not a hard spray or just get sprinklers which can turn in quickly
by (640 points)
@champerty thanks. I have only ever seen a dog there once though. If I knew which dog it was I would speak with the neighbour. Out of 5 houses 4 have dogs  (including me but it's definitely not mine).
by (7.9k points)
@kazimir it’s a problem but a hose won’t hurt it just a gentle spray will be fine

You can buy things that emit a high pitched noise that only dogs can hear that deters them I've seen a few people reccomend them might be worth a try
by (830 points)
Depends on the dog, one of mine responds to dog whistles, the other one shows discomfort when he hears one
by (270 points)
They are really good but if you have children you might not want these. My girls and other kids I know can hear them! They are always moaning when they walk pass people’s houses with them on. They don’t like them at all even the grandparents have to switch them off when we visit! Good for keeping the kids out though!

@kobe1 poxy things, what about all the other dogs and animals who are nearby and being disturbed by that stupid device
by (690 points)
@morell I have dogs never used one just a suggestion thought I'd offer something other then posting dog shit through a letter box

I have the same problem but as my kitchen overlooks the front I’m not in there very often so have never seen the culprit(s). So bloody annoying and careless of the owner(s). If I ever find out who it is the dog poo will be going through their letterbox.
by (640 points)
@selfregulated821 same as me. I've only ever seen 1 dog in there but it was after the act so can't be sure it was that one. I'm pretty sure that its someone going for a cigarette and letting their dog out . It's so frustrating and I think with being stuck in at the moment it's bothering me more than it should do but I really want my children to be able to play there  and if I don't go out and pick it up daily it will pile up. I'm doing it usually twice a day. That's 28 extra piles of poo in my bin before it gets emptied! Argh.

Are you sure its a dog . the reason i ask is because a cat had poohed on my freshly turned over soil, and it wasnt hidden like cat pooh is normally and it looked very much like dog pooh (i have 3 dogs so get to see a fair bit of it lol).
by (640 points)
@perforated Hill yes definitely a dog. I have a 10 year old dog so pretty used to seeing it too. But also I have picked it up warm () a few times after I have seen the same dog out there but can't be 100‰ certain it was that one as didn't actually see it do the deed.

Watergun shoot it and then the neighbour will come to you
by (640 points)
@toms277 I don't know who it is.
by (490 points)
@kazimir but if the dog goes back wet they will come and complain or you will hear on the grapevine who's dog was wet and moaning
by (640 points)
@toms277 I mean I don't know whose dog it is so I couldn't do that anyway.

Wilko sell some stuff you sprinkle to deter cats and dogs
by (640 points)
@gore928 have you tried it? Does it really work?
by (3.4k points)
@kazimir we have a planter at the front of our house embedded in gravel . we have plants in this and always use this stuff to keep the street cats from using it as a toilet. its always worked for us
