Gestational diabetes question: Pregnant with baby #2. Did not have GD in previous pregnancy. Currently 25 weeks and took 1 hr glucoses test yesterday and failed. OBGY suggested I take the 3 hrs test with fasting , which i am scheduled for Tuesday next week. My question 1. Should I make any dietary changes between today and Tuesday (my test) or eat as I was previously so that I results are actual/real and not altered 2. In case I pass the 3 hrs GD test : does it mean i 100% do not have GD or I should be still watchful of my carbs? 3. Has any one failed the 1 hrs GD and passed the 3 hrs GD? Thanks you all!

I failed the 1 hour with my first and passed the 3 hour. I didn't change how I ate because I couldn't eat anything without throwing up until 25 weeks. So I ate what I could regardless of it being carbs or not.

I failed the one hour test with both pregnancies but passed the 3 hour for both. If they want you to change your diet in any way to prepare for the 3 hour test, they will send instructions - I didn’t have to do anything this past time. It is my understanding that if you pass the 3 hour test you do not have GD and don’t have to worry about changing your diet!

Cut out candy and sugar coz you shouldn't be having that anyway. Also watch your carbs. Your plate should consist of 1/4 protein 1/4 carb and 1/2 plate full of veggies

So I had GD with my first and not my second. I wish I could give you the exact right answer, but everyone is so different. First if you are worried, cut sugars and limit carbs if you can. But first and foremost would be cutting the ice cream/candy/fruit roll ups. Stay away from bananas for a while. They are super healthy but a mess for your blood sugar. If you pass the 3 hour test you pass and don’t have to worry at all. Even if you pass with a D- it’s still good and everything is fine.  Now if you fail the 3 hour it isn’t the end of the world. You will meet with a nutritionist and get a blood sugar monitor. Most of the time this can be diet controlled. The weird thing is that everybody’s body is different. For me I could still eat rice, especially fried rice. But my sugars would spike if I were anywhere near a flour tortilla. Every person reacts differently. But I will tel you that as soon as I gave birth it all returned to normal. Good luck!

I failed the 1 hour and passed the 3 hour. I ate normally for the 1 hour and the woman who took my blood told me I shouldn’t have had breakfast before I came, although I wasn’t given any instructions to fast or anything. When I did the 3 hour test, I didn’t eat breakfast and passed. I didn’t have to make any dietary changes afterward so I think you are good to go if you pass the 3 hours one!
by (3.1k points)
@satin like wise before the 1 hr test I ate breakfast and then went for the test. I wasn’t told to not to eat or fast.
by (1.2k points)
@tailwind13 I wish they would explain better up front! Hoping your 3 hour test goes well! If/when baby #2 is on the way for me, I’ll know not to eat breakfast the next time and see if I can save myself from having to do the 3 hour one again! Lol
by (3.1k points)
@satin totally had they told me not to eat breakfast. I wouldn’t be stressed to sit at the lab during at Pandemic for 3 hrs

I failed 1 hour and passed 3 hour. Doctor gave me a suggested eating plan for in between tests. Lots of food and nighttime snack. Not sure if coincidence or causation but relieved I passed and we never looked back from there.

I had GD with all 3 of my kids (currently 33 weeks pregnant). I was tested at 10 wks and passed the 1hr then was tested at 24 wks and failed the 3hr by 1 point!  Your docs office will most likely have you fast for the 3hr test so your diet won't matter because at that point you won't have any food in your stomach. If you do have it, no worries, baby comes out healthy and your GD goes away!

1. No need to make any changes to your diet. My doctor did have me fast 10-12 hours before my 3 hour test, so if you didn't do that before you may need to do this time. No food, but I could drink water. 2. According to my doctors, you 100% do not have GD. 3. I failed the 1 hour test and passed the 3 hour test with both my kiddos (currently 26 weeks pregnant). I will give you a quick heads up that the 3 hour test made me feel a little loopy during hour 1 and hour 2, but I felt fine by hour 3. Once I got home and had lunch, I felt extremely tired and needed to nap for a couple hours. Your experience may be completely different, but I thought I'd mention in case you have the same experience and can plan to take it easy the rest of the day.

@algesia2999 Thomas thank you so much. yes this time I was advised to fast for 12 hrs. So after the first draw of blood they give you a drink and draw blood every hour right? Can you eat anything in between the blood draw or is it just water?
by (6.4k points)
@tailwind13 Both times my experience was that they: 1) Start with a finger prick to get your current blood sugar level, then draw blood to get a baseline. 2) Wait one hour. Blood draw. 3) Wait one hour. Blood draw. 4) Wait one hour. Blood draw. You can have a little bit of water between blood draws, but no food at all until after the final blood draw. I suggest packing something not super sugary to eat when you get back to your car, like a cheese stick or something with protein, to tide you over til you get home. I ate a nutrigrain bar and an apple in my car after my 1 hour test, and the sudden sugar spike did not help me.

@algesia2999 Thomas than you so much!

@tailwind13 You are very welcome! I know how stressful it is worrying about taking on GD at the same time as being pregnant. And even though I was confident I would pass this time, it was stressful having to go out in public and sit in a lab for 3 hours in the middle of a pandemic. So it is totally normal if you're feeling nervous or anxious or stressed out. I'm confident that everything will be okay for you. Even if you have GD, it will be okay. Sometimes living with two possibilities in your head is worse than facing one reality.

@algesia2999 Thomas you just spot on. about my worry. i am already stressed with GD and now Having to sit 3 hr during a pandemic, , jeez. save us all . hope this ends soon

I failed with both my pregnancies, 2nd time had to see a nutritional specialist to monitor blood sugar as I was pregnant with twins. All healthy babies, no issues. Don't worry or stress, GD is manageable and will be a non issue after delivery.

I failed the one hour test with my youngest son and then passed the 3 hour one fine! With me I only failed the one hour by a little bit and I think the only difference was I didn’t fast for that one but did have to fast for the 3 hour.

I failed my 1 hour but passed the three hour. I had to do it twice at 16 and 25 weeks because I have PCOS. I craved orange juice so I drank almost an entire container before my test not realizing and I think that's why I failed.

1. It never hurts to reduce refined carbs 2. It means you don’t have GD, but I’d still be mindful of sugar and refined carbs if you failed the 1hr 3. I have several friends and clients who failed the 1h but passed the 3!

I always failed the 1 hour. Do not eat, do not even drink water before the 3 hour test. The lab tech both times for the 3 hour test told me that effects the results.
by (3.1k points)
@semitone6974 Healy I was told I can drink water. Would one be dehydrated without water
by (1.6k points)
@tailwind13 yea, they always say you can drink water. But the lab tech that administers the test told me that anything (including water) effects the results. You would absolutely not be dehydrated (but it is annoying). When you are in labor you won’t be able to eat or drink either. A good dehydration test is saliva - if you can create saliva you are not dehydrated (I learned that when I had the stomach flu while pregnant).

Both pregnancies I failed the 1 hr. First pregnancy I was borderline for the 3-hr with a conservative doctor so “failed” having to monitor glucose every day but my sugars were managed exclusively with diet. (Some people require insulin or other medications. ) That hassle of daily testing motivated me to eat more carefully the second time. super low carb (especially before noon) and as much fiber as possible worked; passed the 3-hr for the second pregnancy without an issue. Good luck.

I’d eat your normal diet. You want to know if you have it, so I wouldn’t change anything. It’s about your body’s ability to process the sugars - not your diet necessarily. I failed both tests with my 2nd. I was sent to a dietician and was able to control mine with diet. It’s important to realize you don’t cut carbs completely. A lot of people misunderstand that. It’s about balancing them. (Dietician gave me a carb count for 3 meals and 3 snacks a day. ). You do test your blood sugar 3 times a day. I got along amazingly well, the diet is actually a really healthy way of eating, and baby is now 13 with no impact from it.

Keep doing what you’re doing unless you feel you’re eating a lot of carbs/sugars. I’d check with my doctor first. All my pregnancies were fail test #1 and pass test #2. My mom had the same thing happen to her.

Both kids I failed the one hour, and passed the 3 hour tests. I would just eat normally if I were you. If you do fail the 3 hour test, diet modification will be one of the interventions for you going forward so it’s probably best to have an accurate picture of how your glucose reacts to your typical daily diet when you get tested. Good luck!

I followed the ‘diet’ they told me to do before the 1hr test and failed. I passed the 3 hr test when I just ate like I normally did. Good luck!

With my daughter I failed the 1 hr and passed the 3. Now I’m currently pregnant with baby #2- 28 weeks and unfortunately was dx with GD two weeks ago. So far I’m just monitoring with diet and checking my sugars 4x a day- it’s annoying not being able to eat what I want when I want- but it’s really not the end of the world! I did not change diet with either test either time. Good luck mama
