Because of social distancing, we are not doing our normal activities. For example, we do not have private tutors come or our cleaning lady clean our house. Question, what is the protocol, should I still continue paying even though not tuitors or cleaning people are coming to our house? Thank you in advance!

I have been paying my cleaning lady 75% of her rate even though she’s not coming. She’s independent and so I feel it’s only right.

@selena I agree, it has been hard on our business also. I think that if they always take care of you then return the favor.

If it’s a service you regularly use I would continue to pay at least something if you can. We are still paying our home daycare person. We aren’t rich by any means, we just get by, but it’s already factored into the budget and I know she needs the money. I feel if you still pay people something during this time (if you can! ) that they will be grateful and take extra good care of you in the future.

If you still have income coming in, it's the right thing to do.

Yes I would pay. I am a nanny and not working (their decision not mine), and am getting full pay from my family still (Their choice, not mine). This is a hard one because a lot of the same women that will tell you to do this were completely against paying even half of the tuition for their kids daycares even when they loved them so . I am curious what other people will say to you on here.

@providence thank you for your thoughts! I totally get it and I want to make sure I am considerate! These are hard times for so many!

@ceilometer oh for sure I totally get it. i also understand that every single family has different situations and abilities and I know not everyone can do what others are. I just wanted to give one more opinion!

@providence I really value your opinion and input! Thank you!

If you’re in a place where you can afford to, please do! They will appreciate it more than you will ever know❤️❤️❤️I had a client do this for me and it’s beyond what i ever could’ve expected. This is so hard on so many people and it’s amazing to see people’s hearts open to helping others!

@multilateral I know! I want to and it may be a right thing to do.

Maybe a bit. but as a small, non essential business owner myself, I don't expect a penny from clients who are not able to use my service, and still have to pay for my lease.

@timmi best of luck getting through these tough times!

How wonderful of those still paying for the small business services though not currently receiving services!

I think it depends on the individual's financial situation. My sister is a tutor and switched to online sessions. She's a grad student and lives at home so she's charging less than her regular rate because you can't compare online tutoring to in person instruction. It allows her to continue to earn an income while lessening the financial burden on her kids' parents.

@twaddle I am glad she is still tutoring, even though at a lower cost. I agree, online learning is not the same as in person!

We can’t afford to continue paying these, however when we pick the services back up and income comes in steadily again, we’ll be able to tip extra.

For the tutors is there the option online? I’ve been tutoring my students online and still getting paid. I personally wouldn’t expect to be paid as a tutor if I wasn’t teaching. For the cleaning lady do what you can afford.
by (470 points)
@frymire Thank you! There is an option online, but one of my kids is too young for online learning, she cannot focus for too long and gets distracted.
by (570 points)
@frymire I offered them online tutoring , given updates with free resources made available to me I’ve checked in with them but none of my clients continued for whatever reason. Most didn’t even thank me. That’s not their norm so I think they’re just overwhelmed. I designed online courses I know how they work I would’ve loved the extra income! None but the refugees I used to tutor have kept in touch with & thanked me. Count your blessings thank your clients! You’re very lucky!

Yes. I have had the same cleaning person (sounds wrong) for years. If I afford her services, I can afford to pay her.

I clean homes, and pretty much not working now, only a few of my clients still pay me even though I am not cleaning for them and I am so so grateful! But I can’t live off that so I am starting another job at Home Depot to pay the bills until all this is over

I still paid my cleaning lady for the 3 cleanings we will miss through the stay at home order. I figure a lot of people will be cancelling and it’s already built in our budget. Since my husband and I are fortunate we are both still getting full paychecks I figure if I can help someone else maintain their income during this time it’s the least I can do
