I honestly believe that people telling her to just tough it out can't be dog owners! Grooming of a dog is, in some cases, essential to their health. Without proper grooming overgrown, matted fur can lead to sores, cysts, infections, difficulty walking and general distress to the pet. It's not like a hair cut for a human. This is coming from the owner of a short haired dog who thankfully needs no grooming. Please understand and be considerate, there are ways a groomer can work whilst observing the guideliness.

@ninetta I appreciate that. And let’s all learn to be kind and considerate to one another
by (680 points)
@ninetta thanks for reminding people these important things. I agree that only non-4 legged family owners can say such things.
by (1.6k points)
@ninetta agreed! Some dogs it’s truly essential! So I hope we get the clearance soon!

Definitely wish there was a way us groomers could still be working. Unfortunately we dont want to jeopardize our license. We've tried taking it to congress and we aren't essential
by (5k points)
@palocz3 it baffles me that a drive through car wash is essential but groomers aren’t.

@directoire4518 i knoww  I'm missing all my doggie clients.

I'm having the SAME problem with my standard. He needs to be shaved
by (1.6k points)
@newsy1185 we are going to have so many dogs that will be shaved down! I feel bad for lots of my clients but our hands are tied
by (710 points)
@hunter1 do you recommend a good clipper to order for matting? He is always bad come March after the snow and rain.
by (3.7k points)
@hunter1 Are we 100% on the guidelines? Our dog daycare just re-opened after reviewing them and I think grooming is more of an essential service.
by (1.6k points)
@newsy1185 honestly Wahl or andis would be my favorite. But then you will need blades as well.
by (1.6k points)
@ninetta from what I know groomers period cannot be open. Daycares and boarding can be but they still are not supposed to be grooming.
by (1.6k points)
@ninetta but i agree Grooming should be essential before daycares
by (3.7k points)
@hunter1 It's crazy, such a shame the comfort and health of our pets aren't considered essential. I wonder if a vet would do it?
by (1.6k points)
@ninetta I wonder if it was like so matted that it was effecting the dog, but I feel like it would have to be pretty severe. When was your dog groom last? How long do you keep the coat?
by (3.7k points)
@hunter1 I don't need to have mine done thankfully, I have a Beagle for that very reason. The problem with matting is that it's not always visible on the surface, it can happen next to the skin and cause sores and can happen in a matter of weeks for some dogs especially if they're older and cant/won't groom themselves, but you know that from working the industry.

@comorin not sure if you’ve ever had a Maltese but she gets matted really bad and her long nails put her in pain and then she starts biting them to the point they bleed. It’s not fun, but this Is quite necessary for her health.
by (890 points)
@comorin I 100% understand. Our Morkie had a appointment that he needed on the day they started the Shelter in Place. So they cancelled. It took two of us to try to trim the matted areas and the nails I really truly understand. This is a health issue for our dogs. Ours bit his paws so much because of his long nails he bled. We did the best we could.
by (930 points)
@huss8064 it IS becoming a health issue and they really need to re-evaluate that bring an essential service. If you can do no contact vet visits you can do no contact grooming.

All of us legally should be ah down! She is scraggly but doesn’t look matted so should be ok until we open up!
by (2.3k points)
@hunter1 Shes matted by her paws and I’m afraid of it just getting bigger and closer to her skin. She won’t even let me brush her which sucks.
by (1.6k points)
@epigraphy ya I can understand that. I will say I wouldn’t be to concerned yet. If the matting was tight and all over then I would tell You to seek out a vet bc that can be very uncomfortable but she will be ok! (Groomer for 14 years) I feel bad for all my clients to bc it does stink we can’t work, but we want to just as much as you guys want us to! Lol
by (2.3k points)
@hunter1 how in the world do you guys get a Maltese as crazy as her to sit still for hair & nail trimming?!?! It still boggles my mind.
by (1.6k points)
@epigraphy Lol! Honestly I will say most of them sit and react much better to the groomer than the owners, maybe bc we are trained to do it? I’m nto really sure but seems true a lot lol.
by (1.6k points)
@epigraphy and Lol they never al sit still. But it does help that we have experience doing it I think and we aren’t the owners lol
by (2.3k points)
@hunter1 it’s like kids that listen to strangers more than their own parents. Guess it makes sense.
by (1.6k points)
@epigraphy yep haha! It’s so common lol
by (1.6k points)
@epigraphy couldn’t tell you how many times my clients go “how can you do that? She won’t let me near her hahahahaha

Just try and brush as much as she will let you. A groomer would face major fines if open.

I swear I saw a dog getting groomed last week when I went to pick up our pet food order at Petco. But you may want to consider a muzzle and buying some stuff for home.

If you have a two person household, one person holds a spatula with peanut butter and the other swiftly trims the necessities. If no other person available, smear pb to parchment paper that is taped to the wall at dog height and get in there!
by (2.3k points)
@catania9 she’s Insanely picky and hates treats and even PB

I brought my crazy dog that won't let me cut his hair on a super long walk with hills, and then gave him benadryl and CBD oil. He was at least calm enough for me to trim everywhere other than his face. My daughter distracted him and pet his face while I tried to trim his nails.
by (2.3k points)
@overtax7 omggggggg I’ve never given her anything! So ballsy of you.
by (2.3k points)
OMG I have to even when I bring him to the groomer! Knock his butt out! Lol

Im a groomer and the Illinois Professional Pet Grooming Association reached out to the state and was told that grooming is not essential and any groomers that are operating are doing so illegally. The best thing to do is wait until the salons are open again, it can be dangerous to groom your own dog, be careful taking scissors or clippers to your pet because you never know what might be hiding under their fur. If your worried about matting avoid bathing your dog unless you are able to dry it all the way after the bath because air drying can cause matting to worsen.
by (2.3k points)
So unfortunate. But thank you and I hope we can get back to normal soon.

Just keep brushing and combing as you would between groom appts. If nails are an issue contact you're DVM and make an appointment for a nail trim.
by (1.6k points)
We called ours and they said that nobody was there to do nail clips. It's freaking us out, her dew claw is starting to curl up into her paw. Last time I tried to clip her nails myself I cut her quick really badly and I swore I would never do it again.
by (570 points)
It takes quite a while for nails to become that seriously long. Certainly longer than groomers have been able to accommodate. As I've suggested. If it is a matter of physical discomfort, call your DVM and explain it as such.

Try calling animal hospital that have grooming inside. Since animal hospital are still essential.

Do NOT go to Naperville animal hospital for grooming they are open but only have one groomer. And the groomer is rude and rough with dogs! I left because I didn’t trust him. Even the staff there knew he was a problem
by (2.3k points)
Thats unbelievable! So sad. Glad you left, and thank you for sharing.
by (2.8k points)
He was literally a joke. I always use them and love the normal groomers. I waited 4 weeks for that spot and he would not cut my dog short! I refuse to pay $80 for a haircut I don’t like. And my dog is my baby literally I’m not leaving her with anyone I don’t trust. He even attempted to take the leash out of my hand after going back and forth for 10 mins about what I wanted done. I was infuriated that they would allow someone like him to work there
by (8k points)
Sarah, they got all new groomers a few months ago. Our dog had 2 terrible cuts after the old groomers left. They gave us a discount on the second try, but it was worse than the first. Of course, we had an appointment today at a new groomer that was rescheduled for May 1st now.
by (230 points)
@neutralization7 who is the groomer there?
by (2.8k points)
@conjugal I didn’t get his name but he will be the only one there until order is lifted.

Even if you do find a groomer willing to do this not only are you allowing them to risk losing their license for a temptation of making a few bucks but you're also risking infection to you or this groomer. Please wait. It's the safest, most responsible thing to do for everyone. Your dog will survive.

Best thing is to wait! If you can have someone else hold her so you can at least trim by her eyes, that should suffice.

I had the same issues. I called my vet and they were willing to do the nail trim (they came out and collected the dog at the car wearing a mask and gloves, I paid over the phone, and then they brought her back). And I am planning to give her a dose of pet CBD oil (available at most pet stores) which will calm her down to let me brush out matts or trim her a bit.

I have a long haired mainecoon cat . he gets so mean when he hasn’t been shaved. He’s now gotten to the point of hissing at my household! Groomers should be open, very little direct contact with a groomer. you get more contact with the cashiers at the store than you do a Groomer!

Never had a dog that required grooming. Can you call the vet to make an appointment for nails? I know some will come out, take the dog in, trim nails and the bring back out. Card processed over the phone. Also you may want to try just buying a set of $20 human hair clippers off Amazon and trimming the matted areas. She doesn't need to look good, but avoid matting so she isnt in pain.

I am in a similar boat. Luckily my Shih Tzu’s fur doesn’t matte a lot, but she smells and HATES getting a bath. I bought a muzzle, but her snout is too short. It took 3 of us to bath her yesterday, and now I know why she has a caution on her file. [sigh]
