Hi, everyone, I'm doing a story for the Tribune on what to tip delivery people, etc., in the age of coronavirus. Can you tell me how much you think we should tip the Grubhub worker, the Instacart deliverer, and/or the plumber/electrician/mail carrier/newspaper delivery person? DM me if that works better for you. Thank you!

They’re out there when people don’t want to be and still providing a service. I would say tip more than 20%. We’ve been tipping 40-50% and I’ve been out of work since March 22nd. If they don’t want to tip then don’t have anything delivered

More than 20% for both grocery and restaurant delivery?

@sierrasiesser97 I do more now than ever. I’m in the service industry and always tip more than 20% anyway

Is that 20% for both grocery and restaurant delivery?

I have never ordered groceries but I would do the same. They are providing a service to you.

I tip 50% regardless of Covid. Mostly cuz I stink at math and dividing by 2 is easier ‍♀️‍♀️ if through app && it does tip for me I pick the middle number

Please tip at least 20% unless they really messed up and you know it’s the delivery persons fault.

This is interesting. I just ordered Uber eats for my mother n law who lives out of town and there was $15 in service fees but “free delivery” Does Uber eats pocket the $15 and delivery person gets nada?
by (730 points)
@institutionalism the service fees do not include the tip.

Wow, some shoppers are making bank on you! If you’re able to tip big, that’s awesome! But for those of us watching a budget, I think it’s helpful to know how they are paid from Shipt, too.

Someone on one of these groups that is a driver for these companies had complained that people will place their order online and add a large tip which attracts drivers to select the delivery out of the queue faster than others and they get there order quicker but the customer will go in after the fact and zero out or lower their tip for no reason. It makes me wonder why people are asked to add their tip before receiving the order? Aren’t tips supposed to be determined by the the quality of service? So the tip should be applied after the order is received. I don’t use these services because why pay extra in tips and fees for something I can pickup myself? I just think it defeats the purpose to add a tip to the order before the service is rendered.

@jerboa well that's because it takes a Persons time and gas (and other car parts) to get your order to you. We don't get paid by the hour, and didn't always get tips either. For a portillos order we may get $3. 25-4. 50 to drive your food up to 12 miles. For Walmart we get $4-5 . jewel 4-6. And most other places about the same. So we want to make sure when we accept a order will make money and not waist our time and gas. We too have families to provide for.

I have been doing Meijer pick up thru shipt. I spend about $150 and tip $20 cash. Instacart for Costco runs vary depending on size of order.

20% They are taking risks and getting the job done!
by (510 points)
For both groceries and food delivery? And is that what you would have paid before?
by (2.7k points)
@sierrasiesser97 I don’t order groceries. And yes. I did. Delivery drivers get 20% because they get the food to me!

I realize we are all facing different struggles and that not everyone can do their own shopping at this time. I also realize that most of the shoppers need their jobs. However, I, for one, am so thankful that I haven’t had to put a price on someone’s head over risking my own. I put on a mask, stay six feet away as best I can and go myself. If you can afford to do so, are you paying these people as though they will get sick instead of you? Just a different perspective.
by (2.8k points)
@myasthenia I’ve thought of this too but Shipt/ Instacart etc are basically their own business. They choose when they work and order they take. Without the orders they are out of work.

In general I am tipping larger amounts when we get food from places. Mainly we have been picking up from places we usually went to before quarantine. I figure these businesses are important to my family and I want to be able to support them while they are taking risks to make my life a bit easier. But the other businesses we have ordered from we have been over tipping as well 25% or more in some cases I know times are tough for people in the service industry and my family is fortunate to be financially secure right now. This is one way we feel we can help the economy while still minimizing health risks to everyone. I am referring to restaurants I have not used grocery delivery

I tip %20 and that includes grocery delivery. It’s only getting worse for delivery drivers and shoppers. I’ve done delivery and about %20 of people actually tip and most are about %10 or less.
by (510 points)
That's for restaurant delivery too?

We only use grocery delivery services right now, no takeout. During the pandemic we tip $50 on a $250 and under order, $100 on anything higher. They are risking their health and lives so I don’t have to. One of the shoppers posted in another thread about this subject and showed what they see on their end when orders come in. They make peanuts with instacart and shipt. Before the pandemic we tipped 20%.

20-25% Before corona and currently though I haven’t had anything delivered since this started other than fedex and ups and I have snacks/bottled water waiting for them since they can’t receive a tip. I work in the spa industry and I know what it’s like to do a services for someone and get a crappy tip and I never tip on a credit card because it’s taxed. I give cash and if I’m short on cash it crushes me to leave anything on a credit card. Most people don’t know that credit card tips are taxed.

You all are so very generous. I have been working instacart for years now and 95% of people never tip this. I get people tipping $2 on a $100 order when instacart only gives us a base pay of $7.
by (1.2k points)
@loosen I've always been so interested how the pay structure works for i. c. so if someone doesnt tip u then u only make $7 for an order?
by (510 points)
@loosen Have your tips gone up at all since the coronavirus?
by (1.1k points)
@madsen yes exactly
by (1.1k points)
@sierrasiesser97 yes some people have been extremely generous.
by (1.2k points)
@loosen oh hell no! I'd be annoyed. When shopping for my own groceries I either buy myself a treat or stop for coffee or something usually cost myself $7 lmao I'll be damned if I'm shopping for someone else for that cheap‍♀️
by (1.1k points)
@madsen yes it’s tough. I tend to not take those orders
by (1.2k points)
@loosen so u know tip before u start?
by (1.1k points)
@madsen yes I do but the customer has 3 days to change it.

During this whole pandemic I've ordered food once and it was one order of chipotle. I think the total was 12. I tipped 5 bc she made my life easier and I needed her to know I appreciated her as well as make it worth it for her, gas time and life! Now I'm also a tipped employee when working so I tend to be generous but I think tipping 1 or 2 when someone is BRINGING it to ur home is ridiculous considering time and gas!
