Hi Moms!  My ongoing fifth grader is behind in reading .Hi Moms! My ongoing fifth grader is behind in reading . He does not like to read the fiction or non fiction explain what happened in the story. He does recieve support and services in school. Should i worry too much that he is not reading chapter/fiction books or accept him the way he is. We are super confused. Should we hire a tutor? He does have attention issues not sure that is the reason he hates reading. Looking opinion from experts . Thank you!

I would continue with the help and try to get a tutor - it’s very important that he can tell you what happens in a story - it shows comprehension understanding

My kiddo didn’t like reading too much either. We kept looking until we found book series that were fun to read. C also had a great tutor. I also never said no to a graphic novel. There are some good historical ones out there that caught C’s interests. Just keep trying different things.

@unilateral can you give info of the tutor?

@photosensitive I will see if she is accepting new students. If she is, I’d be happy to share her info with you.

@photosensitive she’s not accepting new students right now. One place to check is on your son’s school’s Website. They list a number of tutors that they recommend and often the tutors are teachers at that school or at another school.

I highly recommend continuing to search for books or a series that catches interest. I have found with my students, that is the most important part. Once they find something they enjoy, it is a much easier "battle" to take on. If you can read along with him that could be helpful too.

As a middle school teacher reading ability is really important. It is important to continue to read over the summer and to continue developing those skills. If nothing else what about a book on CD? he could listen to the story and answer questions to practice comprehension. Or read a book together switching off pages. My middle child is dyslexic and dislikes reading. These are things that have worked with her. we all loved the book super fudge. it’s hysterical!

Recommend having him listen to book audio while read actual print book Also can try reading sections of books in graphic novel form that have been made into movies. Ask librarian for ideas A tutor can go through reading comprehension exercises that can help with test prep. Recommend Roxanne dilegge at wsea west suburban educational associates I'm at www. dunhamcounseling. com specialize in parenting for twice exceptional kids and executive functioning coaching via zoom videochat

There's a book titled "The Daily Five" that you would find helpful. It is also a program used in some schools. You can google search the title for more information. The approach makes sense.

Is he strong in a different subject? Some people/kids have preferences for what they like. Have you tested to learn what his learning type is? Kinetics, aural, visual, etc?

@musgrave he has diagnosis of ADHD and asd.

@photosensitive gotcha. Is there maybe appropriate video game or something that has a lot of dialog that maybe he could play and would need to learn to read to understand the story or to play? I know it is odd, but trying to e creative. I have 2 cousins who teach students with the same diagnosis and others; I will ask them if they have ideas or recommendations, maybe they know a website with content or something.
