Id like to know as well. My 10 year old has a procedure coming up as well that she will have to get one for.

@corrugation my 1yo was screened over the weekend, at Luries you’ll pull into the parking garage and a nurse will open your child’s door and swab their nose while they sit in the car. Takes less then 5 minutes

@ostracoderm we have to go to Javon Bea in Rockford.

My 1yo just got a COVID test at Luries over the weekend! No, the nurses will swab both of his nostrils while he’s in his car seat.

@ostracoderm yay! Thank you so much! That’s a relief! ❤️

@expressman6021 you’re welcome! Well wishes to you & you’re little one! It was over quickly but I made sure to have snacks on hand immediately so she only cried for a minute or two lol

@ostracoderm oh smart! I will make sure to have some of those! And thank you! Hope your little one is doing well too !

Does he need the test or just to be screened?
by (1.3k points)
@oceanic They make kids having procedures be both screened and tested.

GO to URGIKIDS in naperville. No need to drive downtown. My son is having a procedure this Thurs/Friday so we go our test there yesterday. Curbside, Easy. You do have to have a virtual consult with the doctor first, but that makes sense

@detainer1 is your sons procedure through Luries? They told me the only place is Luries in Chicago on Sunday. If I don’t have to travel that far that would be amazing.
by (2.2k points)
@expressman6021 no, sorry, my son's procedure is a surgical center in oakbrook. we are both required to test negative on covid swab before coming in. If Lurie is telling you that they will ONLY accept test results from Lurie's then that stinks. I would not want to have to drive down there just for the swab :-( When we did our with urgikids, the swab goes to quest so it's not like it's some random lab or something.
by (550 points)
@detainer1 I didn’t even think to ask. I’ll definitely call them and see what they say. Thank you!
by (14.6k points)
@detainer1 they must have a reason. Take the drive.
by (230 points)
@expressman6021 Luries has a location in Westchester (near Oakbrook mall) doing drive through testing. It’s open Monday through Friday. So much easier than the drive Downtown.

We did ours at UrgiKids and it was an easy experience. That said, the test came back negative and we are certain my daughter had it.
by (2.2k points)
Did you have the swab or the antibody test?
by (1.3k points)
@detainer1 she had the swab. I’ve been sick for 9 weeks with it and she had a fever and chest pain for 14 days. We are having the antibody test later this week.

Definitely ask about getting test somewhere associated to cdh since they are a part of luries. I know this is different but we’ve always been able to do labs there and our luries doctors could have access.

Ask for a blood test . - Refuse the swab. Swab tests- a lot of them are faulty
by (6.9k points)
@detainer1 they told us we can go somewhere else but only if they’ll guarantee results. Might be best to go to the hospital to guarantee they get them in time
by (6.9k points)
@detainer1 is it painful?
by (2.2k points)
@corrugation it wasn't comfortable but not nearly as bad as I thought it would be
by (6.9k points)
@detainer1 ok my 10 year old has to do it and she has bad anxiety
by (540 points)
@gaskin4650 unfortunately you just can’t go anywhere to get test done. Each hospital has their own allocated amount of testing kits and a portion of that goes to required testing procedures. At my hospital we don’t even have testing at our hospital for outpatients, only inpatients. They have to go to a testing place. Also the hospital has to be able to follow up with the results like others said, with the direction of test being done within 72 hours. It’s very complicated at this time.

My 4 yr old just had surgery at Luries yesterday. We were required to do a test 48-72 hours before surgery. It is SO quick, they were done swabbing him before I was done signing the consent form.

@nedanedda11683 thank you so much! Hope your little one is doing well!

Can they guarantee results back quickly? we have to test 72 hours before the procedure, and the hospital has to have the results 24 hours before
by (890 points)
@corrugation I think/assume Luries had us test at a Luries location for that very reason, to ensure they had the results back in time.

How do the kiddos do with the swabs? I’ve heard it’s pretty painful and really far up the nose
by (890 points)
@zeculon depends on the test. Some are quick swabs. One is what you described, where they swab the back of your throat through the nose. To be honest it’s pretty awful. My son (3yo) and I had to have that one a few weeks ago.

Waited 3 hours with my toddler in the car. It's been two weeks and they said they may have lost my test.

From what I’m reading the viral test, to confirm an active infection ( symptoms or not) is only a nasal swab. They need to test the respiratory tract where it lives. The blood test is for antibodies. Hospital want confirmation of a negative viral test.

At the main hospital result is given 24 hours. Northwood and Westcheater is 3 days. My daughter had her procedure today.

My 2. 5 year old daughter had a drive thru test at Lurie's in Westchester. It was a quick nose swab which took less then 5 minutes.

You won’t have to give it to him a medical professional Will do it it’s just a little tickle it’s not pleasant because they have to put it up there but it won’t be as painful as getting a blood draw even with frizzy spray. Most of outpatient centers are doing them it’s a drive-through moves very quickly seeing it’s by appointment only

We are having a procedure at Luries next week as well and we are going to the Westchester location. They told me that she has to stay in the car roll her window down and they will come to the window and do it for her.
by (890 points)
@hoard496 that’s where we went for the test last Friday and surgery yesterday. They’re great with the kids when they do the test and so friendly and gentle, the PPE they have on was scarier to see. It’s SO quick though!
by (460 points)
@nedanedda11683 . thank you for the information. I appreciate it. I was curious.
by (240 points)
@hoard496 yes that is exactly how they are doing it.

They will do it for you. I see some people recommending other places, but always try to follow the procedure required by your child’s surgeon. There are some hospitals that don’t accept results tested at certain labs etc. Your little one won’t like it but will do fine! Take a special treat for them to eat immediately afterwards, and have a tissue and hand sanitizer ready as it will make their eyes water and they will probably want to wipe their nose. You’ve got this!

I went to Walgreens. Went at 7:45. They open at 9. Super easy and results in 5 hours. You can make an appointment too but if you don’t have one you have to go early. It’s at the closed Walgreens on Boughton.

Do you need a doctor order for that location at Walgeeens? Or can you just show up?
by (1.9k points)
@hettie just show up with an ID
by (130 points)
Thank you! So you present your insurance since it's a quick test and not the one that takes 4 days. correct?
by (1.9k points)
@hettie I haven’t actually been charged for it! They didn’t ask for my insurance and I got the mailed in results today. Nothing but results. I have to get the test for work so this is a huge relief!
by (1.9k points)
Also- for everyone wondering. You take the q tip and put in your nose yourself. So it isnt up to your brain. Pretty harmless, especially for kiddos
by (130 points)
My daughter ended up going to the Premium outlet drive through. She got there at 5am, was done by 8am. So not too bad, but we would have loved getting results quicker instead of having to wait almost a week. Thank you for the info. glad you are healthy! I will keep this in mind if anyone else in the family needs testing. :)
