Has anyone done a DIY update on your kitchen cabinents? Thinking about painting our basic wood cabinents to spruce up the kitchen to sell. Successes? Horror stories? Debating if its even worth it!

I just painted mine about three weeks ago. It went surprisingly smooth! Valspar makes a cabinet paint that’s sold at Lowe’s. You don’t need to sand or prime first with this paint. All I did was clean the crap out of the cabinets first with a warm water/dish soap/vinegar mixture. My cabinets were wood and I painted them ivory. Zero issues and zero complaints. If you have any questions about it, just let me know!

How strong was the paint odor? I would like to paint our cabinets a different color but we have allergies

@kosygin I didn’t think it was too bad at all. In fact, when we did the first coat, I commented that I didn’t even notice a paint smell. My boyfriend said he did but I hardly noticed. However, I’m also not super sensitive to paint smell so maybe it wouldn’t bother me as much as it would to someone who is.

@yazbak did you take the cabinets off to paint them?

@ethbun29887 we took the doors off, yes, but that was it. We didn’t even take the stuff out of the cabinets.

We did a long time ago. Invest in a sprayer and practice first so you get good at before you are doing cabinets. Buy the heavy cabinet paint as well

If you're just painting them to see, I'd reconsider. Many realtors will advise against this because if it is not done really well, it can actually HURT your resale value.

I did mine myself 7 years ago and love them. im not a chalk paint fan at all, i used glidden gripper as my primer and interior semi-gloss wall paint and theyve held up great. I used a small foam roller. took about a day to remove the doors/drawers and then prime, a day to paint, and a few hours to put it all back together once it was dry. shitty photo but you get the idea:

I had cherry cabinets. We sprayed them with a Fuji paint sprayer. The whole process took months. We had like 70+ cabinet faces. Tons of work. We also used BM advanced paint. So happy with the results.

We painted ours prior to putting our last house up for sale (the appliances for replaced with stainless ones too). It was not difficult but it was time consuming. Once it was done I was sad that we had waited to do it to sell the house instead of sooner.
