How often do people compare rates for car insurance? I just found out I can save $2000 a year by switching companies! I was floored by this and feel like a fool for not shopping around just because I liked my local agent. What car insurance do use and are you happy with the service/cost?

My husband just helped his mom with this. She hadn't shopped around in YEARS, and she saved $120/month on two cars by switching.

We check in pretty frequently, maybe every couple years. So far, Geico has had the lowest rates for us the past few times we've checked.

That’s who I found the cheapest insurance with as well. Will be switching over March 1.

Have you been happy with Geico’s customer service?

@endanger656 Yeah, in fact, their website is actually very good to use as well. We've been pretty pleased.

@endanger656 I also am very happy with them. Very low rates and easy to work with. Years ago our car was hit parked on the street in front of our house, 2 separate times. Both times they were so easy to work with.

I always thought the Geico commercials were just marketing when they said save 15% or more but I actually saved more than 50% with them and their customer service was the first selling point. The insurance agent was offering me all of the reductions he could without me having to ask.

That’s good to know. It looks like I’ll be saving close to 60% my rates going from $310 a month to $140. I decided it was time to shop around when I bought a new used truck and my insurance went up by $70 a month.

@endanger656 those were pretty close to my prices when I bought a new car as well

We have Geico as well. Just bought a beater over the weekend and ran the numbers with them vs MetLife again. Geico has won out for us every time we've checked, though Liberty Mutual has been competitive with other discounts involved. Our main vehicle hit a deer a couple weeks ago and the claims process has been a breeze with Geico.

We have Geico as well. I have compared rates several times and they are always the lowest. We also had excellent service with a claim we had to file. I didn’t save as much as many of you have stated but I live in a low cost area where they would be paying me if they saved me that much lol.

Well shoot. I've always gone with an independent broker who repped many companies. bit recently became a federal employee and hear I get a discount through Geico. I have shipped every 6 months or so, but have never compared against Geico because I don't trust them. but will have to take a look.

Currently with Auto Owners combined with renters insurance but I don't think the discount for renters insurance for 1 bedroom apartment is very huge if I separated out and went without the discount.

@conduction i have Geico. Had to make an uninsured motorist claim when someone backed into the side of my car. It was quick, easy, thorough. They were good to work with. Million times better than progressive & Allstate (I got in a lot of accidents that year. Just an unlucky streak)

My auto insurance was coming due. I shopped around, and even called Geico to see if they’d lower my rates. Turns out they don’t do that in the insurance industry. I could get a miniscule discount (like maybe $4 a month) by switching to Progressive, but I’d lose my Accident Forgiveness. I decided to stay. Most other companies were more expensive for the same coverage.

Geico was by far the lowest best deal last time I shopped around, but it’s been a couple years now.

That's great, just be cautious of the new company. Everytime I hear something like this, when the person goes to make a claim, the new company is a crazy hassle to deal with and won't pay.

So strange, I just started Geico about a week ago, switched from progressive. Saves me about $20 a month.

I usually shop around once a year. although only geico has ever come close to my USAA rate.
by (2.1k points)
@celsacelsius agreed. An factoring in my annual dividend it's even further from the rate too

USAA. I shop and compare every 6 months when my policy is due to renew. Other companies can match my rates, but I've never seen any come close to my rates and coverage. I love USAA.

Any tips on the best way to shop around, like easy website to use? I hate hate hate talking to customer service reps for anything.

I believe it’s called thezebra. com. It didn’t work for me in my area, but according to the commercials it’s supposed to be pretty useful.
