Ring security system tip regarding base station placement: do not place it where there might be a lot of interference from other surrounding electronics. We’ve had our system since November 2018, including 2 extenders, 2 motion sensors, 4 contact sensors, 1 freeze/water sensors, and 4 smoke detectors. In the past week, they all went offline, one by one, beginning with the extenders, except for the motion sensors. We tried resetting them, which either brought them online temporarily, or not at all. Some of the contact sensors were stuck in open mode. So we called Ring support, always excellent, and was connected to Rheaume for assistance. We tried many other things, which proved only partially successful. She put me on hold and came back a little later. She asked about the electronics surrounding our base station. She said she could see a lot of interference with the signal between the base station and the devices. We had the Echo dot, Orbi mesh satellite, speakers, and battery backup within a few feet of the base station. She asked if we could move the base station. We were skeptical: why would the base station placement suddenly be an issue, after over a year of working? No recent changes had been made to the surrounding electronics. Nevertheless, we tried moving the base station to another room. One by one all the devices came online, after moving the base station, and are still online.

That actually tells me all I need to know about the system. And it isn't good. First off, none of those devices should have been interfering with the security protocol spectrum. Second, a properly designed system will deal with interference and work around it, especially when we are talking about security.

@commentative - an article by Ring supporting Ring's diagnosis? Wow. So. perfectly suitable. That said, you've further supported my point. Z-wave is not suitable for a security system protocol. I have Z-wave throughout my house including several "security" sensors (that I'm using for environmental monitoring). It is. decent for automation, but abysmal for life-safety.

There was definitely an issue last week for some. Mine kept going offline and jumping back on. They asked me the exact same question about electronics, mentioned interference but my base station has nothing around it and has been in the same spot since the day the alarm came out. Anyhow, did the quick reset for 1 Sec and it has been working fine since.
