Put it somewhere else, like under tv or on cabinets

I just have it tucked in my entertainment center with my modem, router, Hue hub, etc.

Put it somewhere out of eyesight.

I did the same thing with my tv mounted

Drill a hole through the wall to the other-side and drop it through there lol

by (680 points)
Why did you pick that spot? It works just fine in a cabinet hidden away

by (3.6k points)
I like being able to hear it than stuck in a cabinet somewhere lol @gales1 that would be good to do it the way you mentioned.
by (5k points)
@crotchety It’s better hidden. You can turn the volume up in the app.

Mine is attached to the back of my TV.
by (1.4k points)
Looks like it fell back there.

Put it somewhere where the cable doesn't need to be hidden! There's no need to put it on a wall that high up

by (860 points)
Also don’t keep it some where you are close to all the time. The EMF radio waves coming out if that thing is high. But like everyone said, best to place it somewhere not visible.
by (530 points)
@cymbal No crap. Had it next to the computer speakers in a desk. Jeepers.

Do you guys turn the chime off of yours and just use the keypad chime?

by (1.4k points)
Or do like we do, and use our neighbors unprotected wifi

by (610 points)
Mine is in a closet near the living room.
by (3.6k points)
@hardship24 I don't have a outlet in mine. but do you turn the chime off of your base station and just use the keypad chime?
by (610 points)
No if the alarm goes off you can hear it from both.
by (3.6k points)
@hardship24 correct but I'm saying when doors open and stuff. you turn that chime off of the base station? And only keypad goes off when doors open?

I'm trying to build a ring system. Is this a must have?
by (3.6k points)
@biscay74 order the kit from costco. com they have $40 off and comes with everything you need to start the alarm system
by (3k points)
@crotchety . I cant see the price (not member). Can you tell me what is the price for their 10-pc kit with the $40 off?
by (3.6k points)
@colbycolbye $179 can't get it cheaper than that
by (3k points)
@crotchety - Thats with the $40 off?
by (3k points)
Is this Gen 2?
by (3.6k points)
@colbycolbye 1st gen.

Isn't the whole idea is to have it somewhere mounted to allow the alarm to be heard and not picked up and taken or smashed? Bookcase or cabinet to me wouldn't work?
+48 votes
by (2.6k points)
I just put it in the kitchen in the corner on the counter.

by (1.5k points)
Why do you have it there?

Mine is mounted on the wall behind my stereo since they don't send you a template for a mounting just take your base station and set it right side up on any printer and make a black and white copy instant template

I'm confused why it wouldn't be hung somewhere central in your house. laying around isn't safe and secure I would think.
by (530 points)
Safe and secure from what?
by (1.4k points)
Hawks. and squirrels.
by (3.6k points)
If someone were to break in you wouldn't mind them grabbing your base station and breaking it?
by (3.3k points)
@crotchety you should get an instant tamper alert if they destroy it
by (3.3k points)
@crotchety specifically. Smash-proof: The Base Station will still send an alarm signal even if it is destroyed during entry delay.
https://shop.ring.com/products/alar...ation
by (3.6k points)
@dawnedawson761 still its the brain of the system and I wouldn't want it destroyed lol
by (3.3k points)
@crotchety lol true but once the alarm is tripped destroying it won't stop the police. So peace of mind there
by (3.6k points)
@dawnedawson761 good point also your right on that. Hopefully ring replaces the beat up station lol
by (3.3k points)
@crotchety I would hope so too
by (1.5k points)
@crotchety It's no more secure up there than anywhere else. It's probably less secure as it's so noticeable. Put it behind a sofa or under a kitchen cabinet so it can't be seen
by (3.6k points)
@etruria its screwed into the stud. No one is pulling that down lol
by (1.5k points)
@crotchety It won't stop anyone hitting it lol
by (3.6k points)
@etruria plus the siren will be much louder than in a cabinet put away. On top of a fridge would make more sense than a cabinet.
by (3.6k points)
@etruria true true on hitting it
by (1.5k points)
@crotchety You can keep it out of view in many places without putting it in a cabinet. Mine is behind my sofa, but under or on the top of my kitchen cabinets was another option for me.
by (1.5k points)
The other thing is if it's visible from a window, it can be seen what mode it's in. If you forget to set it at night or when you go out, burglars could see it's not armed.
by (3.6k points)
@etruria now thats a good point to consider. I might move mine elsewhere now cuz I didn't think of that. I wish my signal was stronger to put it upstairs

Mine is sitting on the kitchen counter against the wall. ‍♀️

by (720 points)
I put mine laying on top of my refrigerator. Hidden but still in the open.
by (3.6k points)
@mir48 well that makes more sense than a cabinet or dresser or kitchen counter, since its still up higher. With that said do you keep your chime on both keypad and base station? I been told they have a delay if they both go off. So my base station and key pad is currently close together so I just have my base station chime.
by (720 points)
I turned off chime on the base because my keypad is literally next to my fridge. It's annoying to have them both go off with a delay.
by (3.6k points)
@mir48 ok so simliar to how I have mine right now since both of mine are close together.
by (1.5k points)
@mir48 that’s the keypads. I don’t hang mine I have one on my nightstand other one in living room end table. You only have to charge them once every 9-12 months.
by (720 points)
Yes I know that's the keypad. If you been reading the comments, I'm showing the close proximity of the base that's hidden on top of my refrigerator next to the keypad on my wall.
+46 votes
by (1.5k points)
Fridge or I have mine on my tv stand which my tv I hanged one the wall  but you get my drift hiding in the back of it. I pushed forward so you can see it. It’s better to be out of sight imo
by (3.6k points)
@karimakarin I agree I wanna move mine out of site I think
by (1.5k points)
@crotchety Yes you need to. Mine is hiding away or as others mentioned they put above refrigerator. But mine I wanted it in center of my house and keypads also sound alarm so I have one in my master bedroom and other in living room a distance from base so the audible can be loader and in more bigger area.
by (3.6k points)
@karimakarin yea I'm in a 2 story and the signal is to weak to out the base station upstairs or I would. I'm glad you understand hiding the base station or mounted very sturdy. Others have it just laying around on a table lol
by (1.5k points)
@crotchety I know. It’s the brain of your alarm conceal it.
by (3.6k points)
@karimakarin EXACTLY, I know I have mine in a noticeable spot but its drilled into a stud. Won't be easy pulling it out of that by no means.

It is illegal to run the power cord thru the wall without a in wall power kit. Fyi
by (1.4k points)
I was kidding. but I have seen some pretty crazy stuff.
by (2.5k points)
@maltreat5482 not illegal just against code.
by (460 points)
@maltreat5482 against code yes not illegal. can it be done in his own house and be perfectly fine. yes

I was told insurance companies could not cover if say a fire happened in that location. Just what I was told

Drill a hole behind the base station and another at whatever height you want to hide it. Drop a string with the weight on the end through the top hole and use a bent paper clip or something to pull the string through. Attach the string to the end that plugs into the base at the bottom hole. Pull the string from the top hole to retrieve the plug up through the top hole. Pull that end into the base and reinstall the base. Then plug into the outlet. The cord can then be hidden by something much shorter/smaller or you can cover the cord with a cable hider found at any hardware store (pictured)
by (950 points)
@widener59 cable management system was my thought too. But I have mine on the TV stand hardwired into our WiFi router.

I have kitchen cabinets that don’t go all the way to the ceiling. And power just below for the above range microwave. Perfect place
by (3.6k points)
@eade1 ima look into that if my wifi signal is strong enough
by (1.9k points)
Microwave signal does a number on your wifi

@jurisprudence good to know! Thank you!
by (1.3k points)
@jurisprudence have not had any issues. Cabinet between microwave and base unit

I had an electrician install an outlet up high that’s recessed so the base sits over the top of it concealing it
by (3.6k points)
@normi see now that's perfect! I like that idea also. Lot of these people don't understand this is the base to the alarm and they just have it on a kitchen counter lol
by (840 points)
@crotchety I like it up high For two reasons. 1) if internet goes out, its gets a decent signal over cellular, 2) the alarm is heard easily and is unobstructed
by (3.6k points)
@normi I have the right idea of mounted up high into the stud but dam that cord lol so you did what I need to do now. I know mines in a obvious spot but mounted high and into the stud I'm not worried about it.
by (3.6k points)
@normi I agree with your reasons 100%! So glad someone else understands this.

Mine is on top of the cabinet above the fridge behind the crown molding. Do you need to see it?
by (3.6k points)
@kaolinite no I think thats fine but I want mine central in the house to where the alarm will be better heard in my two story house vs in the kitchen on top of something.
by (740 points)
@crotchety I see what you’re saying. That’s the reason mine is where it is. It’s pretty much right in the middle of the house.
by (3.6k points)
@kaolinite then that's perfect! If its hidden ontop or something. Inside a cabinet or on a kitchen counter I think is crazy since it's the brain or the security system, you want it to be heard and not easy to be tampered with.  I know on the wall is visible but its mounted into a stud, so no one is pulling it down from there lol

by (3.6k points)
Thanks for the input guys! I blocked all the people who aren't here to help. After seeing the comments here, I plan to move it out of view of a window STILL MOUNTED INTO A STUD on the wall and with a electrician adding a outlet beside it on the wall.

by (3.6k points)
Just wondering why placed so high? Mine is by and averaging eight and by the kitchen
by (3.6k points)
@vagrom I feel like, its less likely to be tampered with being so high. Plus I'm two story and from I understand this base station is connected with all the sensors. Today I get in more sensors for upstairs

Drill a hole in the wall and fish it.
by (3.6k points)
@julieannjulien96 id have to fish it up tho. i haven't figured out a easy way to do that.
by (8.5k points)
@crotchety depending on your home and age and the way it was constructed it can be fun.
by (3.6k points)
@julieannjulien96 true. I'm still open to doing that or just getting a electrician to add a outlet right beside it up on the wall.
by (580 points)
I would put it on the ceiling with an outlet box under it. Just run a 14/2 from the existing outlet.
by (8.5k points)
@crotchety it would be cheaper you fish the wire yourself
by (3.6k points)
@pyxidium46431 Reese thats a idea also!
by (3.6k points)
@julieannjulien96 I agree! If I can do it that way I would. But I need to think of a way to fish the wire up
by (8.5k points)
@crotchety i have have a dremel and i poke two holes behind the alarm and one below by the plug. but that said i have in the past had to dremel a hole section and re patch the drywall and paint in case you have horizontal wood studs
by (240 points)
@crotchety can you drop a weighted piece of string from the top down then tape it to the cable then pull up and thru.
by (3.6k points)
@armipotent thing is the wall plug for the base station is big lol

I’d place the base station at chest height and on the corner or toward the corner by wall or cabinet. Then run some plastic molding to his wire down to outlet or UPS.

Mount it somewhere else, or channel the wall with an extension cable and plaster over the top.

You can run the low voltage wiring in the wall behind the base station and out near the baseboard. The other option is using Wiremold products as a raceway and it can be painted if you wish.

by (1.2k points)
This is at the top of my stair case and echos throughout the entire house
by (1.2k points)
Wired from the hot end of the switch on the other side of the wall.
by (3.6k points)
@whiteley6704 @dawnedawson761 Wybo thats my plan! To move mine at the top of the staircase and a outlet ride beside it. I just need to strengthen my wifi signal
+59 votes
by (2.1k points)
Before you run the low voltage wire in the wall check with your insurance carrier as well as your code enforcement office. Folks have had their claims denied when fires happen due to wire not being in wall rated. Not worth that risk!
by (3.6k points)
@pyralid yea ima just hire a electrician to add a outlet up top right beside the base station
