Check the archive (like @
seeress337 said) and other metrics (links, DA, PA, et al). See if the sites still show indexed in Google. I'm not saying finding out these things will give you a for sure 100% they'll be great domains; but, it will help you identify ones that will have a little bit of a push or running start to take off. It'll still rely mostly on what you put up on the domain; how you optimize the site; et al factors. Think about Target (or any brand), as an example. They used that name to create a brand and a then a website for a large multipurpose shopping company; but, it isn't a site about targets. With the write on and off page optimization, any domain will be powerful!
