Meh , ahrefs is still best
by (14.2k points)
For some things, but not everything.
by (340 points)
I prefer Ahrefs for its Content Explorer and I like doing keyword research there better. For everything else, Semrush is much more affordable and just as good or better
by (360 points)
@boatload Chrest muhahaha euhhh no! Ahrefs beats every tool, semrush is mhuahhh moz is for seo clowns
by (3k points)
Guess it depends what for. I find Ahrefs to suck ever since they cut down their index. I still need them because they do certain things that Semrush just doesn't do. But if I had to choose, it would be SEMrush. Hands down. For backlink analysis it's unmatchable.

@torque2 Thank you a lot for sharing your feedback! Would you mind if I DM you and ask some extra questions in regards to "certain things"?
by (3k points)
@beghard Lol "certain things". Sounds kinda scary.  Hit me up, I don't mind at all.
by (590 points)
@torque2 Haha, I copied it from your previous message  DMing you now!
by (3k points)
@beghard Ah lol. I forgot I said that.

Keyword research and Google Ads competitor research mostly. It’s not bad for a quick and dirty audit also to identify any glaring issues in a site.
by (320 points)
@boatload I don't use it but I thought they got rid of ability to see ad words competitor data
by (14.2k points)
@mesocratic Moss Nope. It's one of its best features.
by (320 points)
@boatload thanks man, I guess I have to watch out for the fake news. . Someone said that Google stopped this. Or maybe my mind is playing tricks on me again
by (14.2k points)
@mesocratic Moss It would be pretty ironic if Google got upset about someone scraping information from their website.
by (3.8k points)
I use pretty much all of it. It is a good "median" tempature taker and lots of verticals to see into. Great integrations as well. $$$$

The ability to get search +display ad visuals from competitors is killer. The keyword research capabilities of the tool is also strong but Ahrefs is better for that.
by (650 points)
Thanks for sharing that, Manuel. Would you mind if i asked you a few questions via DM about this?

I find the gap analysis really useful, too. Keyword magic tool helps you find related keywords and volumes. Really versatile tool.

For the money, SEM Rush does the best all around job for small agency level work and reporting. Ahrefs is a better product in my opinion. For larger enterprise level sites . Bright Edge and/or Botify (depending on focus). One of my favorite SEM Rush features lately is the Writing Assistant. I am a huge fan of GDocs and that thing snaps right in. Love it

I am glad the time with SEMrush has stuck in your mind so much that you still mention it after 4 years. And even when you left, you were using our datasets for your studies, so I am not sure where your last statement comes from.

@bircher If you poll SEOs that have been doing hands-on SEO with both ahrefs and their competitors, you'd get a clear consensus on ahrefs being the best. It would hep if they also had basic understanding of what's "behind the numbers" that drice they metrics in the tools. ahrefs and moz where using clickstream data from JumpShot which is insanely accurate. However, JumpShot is now going out of biz so on one measure, ahrefs data won't have that particular big advantage over those that where not using it. ahrefs and moz offer the best articles and content on their blog and other channels about all-around best practices for SEO/content marketing, whereas their other biggest competitor hires marketing people that, mostly (almost all? ), don't have hands-on experience with an actual SEO campaign so write about topics only useful for beginners. I used to work at SEMrush, and have used data sets from all the above for large data studies that where read widely: that's part of why I have familiarity between the tool interfaces and the data behind them.

Keyword Magic helps a ton in a research and mapping phase, Keyword Gap is a hidden gem also - Site Auditor's good for quick checkups, toxic link notifications too. Improvement of Semrush's link database was enough for me to completely separate ties with ahrefs

by (14.2k points)
@leopold that’s not true. I like them both. SEMrush provides competitor AdWords data that you can’t find in Ahrefs.
by (630 points)
@boatload there is a ppc keyword section in ahref too
by (14.2k points)
@leopold and unless they’re have made changes recently it has nowhere near the data of SEMrush. Not yet anyhow.

I’ve been using them for years. I’ve always enjoyed the position tracking feature and quickly adding new keywords Google comes up with from GSC with a few clicks. I also take multiple screenshots for monthly reporting for the clients I work with. I actually have access to 3 accounts 2 from agencies I work with and my own personal account.

Best overall, easy to use, backlinks, etc. i use it mostly to see traffic estimates. ahrefs is better for backlink analysis but prefer semrush even though it doesnt cover all. Semrush is like nivea aftershave; not the best in everything, relatively cheap, and gets the job done with easy use and will not burn your face like alcohol does

A huge shout out to the moderators for this thread. Getting tons of valuable feedback here. It wasn't probably meant for that, but we're actively listening and I'll be sharing it with the devs. Something to cheer them up and also highlight some of the improvements. Appreciate all the comments, guys! And feel free to ping me or @beghard in case you have any questions or comments about SEMrush.
